Only 75 Gigs on my new 100 Gig MacbookPro

Got my cpu and love it , none of the issues reported, however it is a 100G HD and it only says I have 75G available..with no apps installed. I think the OS only uses 10 or so...

Anyone else have this problem?

No apps installed? OS X does a damn good job of robbing you of 20gb of useless apps on a new computer. Did you do a clean install right away?

iLife may be on it which garageband and iDVD take up a lot of space, extra printer drives and languages as well, also if you had apple preinstall any software

18 GB used doesn't sound that much (remember a 100 GB HD is really just 93 GB).

I assume that you have Mac OS X (with all languages and printer drivers) + iLife 06 + Office and iWork trials installed and even if 18 GB is much it doesn't seem too excessive.

Use something like OmniDiskSweeper to see where the GBs went...

Your 100GB Drive will have a maximum capacity of approx 93MB (due to the inability of Hard Drive Manufacturers and Computer Companies to agree what a Megabyte is, namely 1000 or 1024 Bytes, which multiplied up gives quite a difference, 7GB in your case).

That means currently your drive has 18GB Used so far approx. There is normally a lot of unneccessary stuff installed with a default installation, plus iLife will be on there which will account for most of the used space.

If you want to fully maximise your useful space, do a reinstall of OS X and deselect any options you don't want, you'll be surprised how much extra space you get. iLife will occupy a lot though, not much you can do to get around that.

Oh, and once you're done doin that, download Monolingual and remove any languages you don't use. You'll be surprised how much space they take up!

Mitt, your right .. the harddrive size the company says is pre-formatted spec .. So once you format you'll lose 5 to 10% of the size for the format process..

iLife/GarageBand are the Big culprits of Hard drive stealers

they are like 3 - 5 GBs in size, thats each app..

Try DeLocalizer to get rid of unneeded language packs.

I saved 1.8 GB by removing all the languages outside of english.

you can also use an app called "Delocalizer", it gets rid of all the other languages that are on the computer, that can save up to a gig of space.

Mitt, your right .. the harddrive size the company says is pre-formatted spec .. So once you format you'll lose 5 to 10% of the size for the format process..

The difference in capacity is not really much to do with 'formatting', its mainly down to what the hard drive manufacturer defines as a Megabyte (1000 Bytes) and what Apple/Microsoft etc defines as a Megabyte (1024 Bytes).

Hence, your 100GB Drive has been manufacturered to contain 100000000 Bytes of storage space. To the manufacturer, this is 100GB (100 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 = 1x10e11 Bytes). But to Apple/Microsoft etc, 100GB in their terms would require (100 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 = 1.074x10e11 Bytes). The difference between these two values is 7.374x10e9 Bytes, which when you divide by 1024 three times, gives you 6.87GB, the missing space between the 100GB the Manufacturer claims, and the capacity OS X reports.

Of course, formatting will use a very slight amount of space to build its structure etc on the disk, but this is minimal compared with the above.
