I sure wish there was a way to keep an IM client going while browsing :(

Even an iChat that maybe tucked away off screen with a slim tab visible, you could tap it and send/respond to IMs...

I think all of the released IM clients already keep you logged in and continue to send push notifications even when you quit the app. When you get a message you can just click the reply button.
 
I'm rite there with you. But the bigger problem for me is that I have yet to find an app that will support all my multiple clients (google, aim' etc...) that is free

Is there a paid one that will do google aim and yahoo. That does push?
 
Have you tried the meebo iPhone app? It does aim, google, and yahoo and supports push. Works on the iPad from what I can tell
 
I use trillian on my iPhone it stays logged in for 7 days it has AIM,YIM, Google, MSN, ICQ, Myspace chat, and Facebook.
