only sending text messages to other Apple devices (no iMessages)

My iPhone 4S has suddenly gotten to where it sends all messages to other Apple devices as texts, not iMessages. It doesn't even attempt to send them as iMessages.

What could be the cause of this?

What could be the cause of this?

Turn iMessage off and back on in setting if the issue persists then try signing out of iCloud and back in.

Thanks. I didn't know there was an on/off switch for iMessages. It was somehow turned off, and after turning it back on, it's working fine.
