OOo in ObjC?

I understand that NeoOffice offers a version of OpenOffice.org, but why did they have to write it in java? Surely if they want it to be OS X native then they could write it in Objective-C. Is there any real reason why they did it in java? And is there an alternative which is written in Objective-C?

If any skilled Mac programmer is thinking of a project then porting NeoOffice would be a very good idea

If it was rewritten in Objective-C, it wouldn't really be OpenOffice.org anymore, it'd be a separate Office project. A complete rewrite would take an enormous amount of time and manpower. Keeping it written in Java makes it easy to port to many different platforms. The downside is that without some work, it feels foreign on the Mac.
