open apps showing in dock? wasn't there before

before they would just minimise into the the app icon with a little indicator showing its running but now it also showing another app icon in my dock bar

is there a way to get rid of this, is this a new feature? to show running apps. i haven't seen it before

Think it's always been that way. Or I should say, has always worked for me.

If you want it to "merge" with the launch icon: menubar > app_name > Hide app_name
Or: Cmd-H on the window.

I think System Preferences > Dock > Minimize windows into application icon is what you're looking for.
