Trying to install big sur on my 5,1 using the open legacy patcher. I’ve created the usb drive. Done the efi bit first and run the install of big sur. however when the machine reboots for the first time, and I guess boots off the ssd, I get the no entry sign come up and I can not go any further with the install.

The usb installer was created using an OS on a different hard drive to the SSD. Does that make any difference ?

Which version of OC do you have? The Martin Lo package?

I encounter similar issues with restarts (in macOS) but a restart from Windows 10 will always go without issue.

Same behaviour with both Samsung and WD SSDs.

When you get the forbidden sign, power off the machine and start it again and proceed with the install. It should complete after doing this a few times.

When installing with OCLP, I always hold the Option key, to manually choose the EFI partition (which boots with the OCLP patches). Choosing the EFI partition first should immediately follow with the actual boot drive (which you are currently installing macOS).
Just to reiterate here... You would also make sure that your USB bootable installer stays attached to your target Mac, so that a properly set up EFI partition (on your bootable USB) is still available at each (option) restart, until you (hopefully) get to the boot of the actual system again

Yeah that is what I am doing but it still will not boot into the SSD install

rebooted a few times now, each time with the option button help. Then clicking efi, then the install on the ssd. Progress bar under the apple logo gets to full, then the forbidden sign pops up.

can The open core patcher only do an updated install on a HD that had an OS which created the usb drive. Or can it be made on one os, the used to install a clean big sur on a different drive ?

Well…. I got big sur installed in the end. Just needed to do a lot of restarts with the efi first.
my problem now is that there is no metal support for the rx 580 and I am at a loss as why.

Finally managed to up date the bootware to 144, but even after reinstalling big sur there is no metal support with the rx 580. There was weirdly on 10.13 with the old gpu installed
