Open file finder interface on El Capitan... pls help!

Hi, I just upgraded to El Capitan from Yosemite. Things are fine but one thing irritates me..

Let's say I want to open a file the finder box comes up. Then I search the file name (the search box in the upper right hand corner is smaller now! how to increase the size of this box?).. instead of searching in the currently selected folder.. the search defaults to "This Mac" this is irritating. How can I make it so that search only searches the currently selected folder and not "This Mac" ie the entire mac computer.

Go into finder preferences. There should be an option under the advanced tab for "when performing a search" and change that to current folder

It's already set to search current folder but still when I search it defaults to This Mac

If it is already set to search current folder but defaults to this mac then you have found a bug and should report to apple.

Can anyone else confirm this issue? Any work arounds?

@shankar2: You can change the size of the search bar by right-clickining somewhere on the grey bar and selecting customise. You can do this by removing some icons or using non-flexible spaces. The search bar gets bigger when it has more space.

Have you restarted your Finder in between? When you open a Terminal window (in your Utilities folder in Applications) and type the following, what does it return?

defaults read com.apple.finder FXDefaultSearchScope

Something is not working as it should and I’m not sure what causes it. You can set up a new user account and see whether the problem is present there as well, it can narrow it down. My guess is that a reset of your Finder preferences could solve it, but I’m not sure.

have you tried setting the finder to a different option? ie 'search this mac"? then reboot, then try a search. THEN change it to 'search the current folder", reboot...see if that helps. you can also go in to the preferences folder (home>library>preferences) and find "com.apple.finder.plist". move that to the desktop, reboot. see if that works. (hold the 'option' key when clicking on the "Go" menu to get to the User Library. just some ideas...
