Do you mean "hidden", i.e. invisible folders, or "Packages", such as applications, which are in fact folders containing many files inside? It sounds like you're talking about packages.
A folder is a package when a specific bit is set in the folder's meta-data on the disk. Usually, things need to be packages for them to work properly.
AFAIK, there is no setting for the Finder to treat packages as folders. The Terminal treats them as normal folders, though.

If you "show hidden files" on Mountain Lion or Mavericks(not sure about before that) you can't just double click on a hidden folder to look inside it. You have to right click and select Open, or else use CMD+O.
This might be the stupidest feature ever. Couldn't figure out why I couldn't open it.

I save shsh blobs quite frequently and like to keep them managed so I go into the .shsh folder a lot.
But I guess there isn't another way besides right click open. Thanks for the help though.
