Hey guys,

Just got a brand new iPhone 14 Pro this week. Cool machine.

However I guess I messed up with something during setup and it’s driving me crazy.

On my iPhone 13, if I were to open a link let’s say received on my gmail or something, it would run like a in-app browser.

But on my 14 Pro it is opening a safari tab to run the link. Which I hate.

And I can’t seem to find the settings to change this. Anyone care to help?

now i see it

That behavior is specific for each app. The ones that open a link in the app’s browser do it because a rudimentary browser is built into that app. Possibly an update to an app that used to do that but now doesn’t got rid of the feature.
Embrace links that open in Safari. Its a much better experience than the claustrophobic prison being locked inside app browsers.

Thank you for the feedback. It’s currently happening to me on the Gmail app, and in this specific case I would rather have the in app browser opening to avoid the clutter of spam on my safari history when I want for example click on a “unsubscribe” link.

It appears that Google removed the in-app browser at some point and you likely got the updated version when your new phone downloaded the apps.

If you search for instructions on the web there are older posts that point to a setting in the Gmail app itself, Gmail>Settings>General>"Open web links in Gmail", but this setting no longer exists (nor does Gmail>Settings>General). Leads me to believe it's gone.

Google may bring it back…who knows.

I've heard something about Apple considering allowing iOS browsers not built on Webkit. Maybe Google is working on a version of Gmail with it's own non-Webkit browser built in. My speculation.

Thanks a lot for the clarification!

Guess I’ll ride with what I have then. No biggie!

just FYI in-app browser usually logs everything you type and everywhere you tap on screen, including passwords / bank data / credit card numbers and so on
multiple companies admitted doing it for whatever purposes
