I have been reading about the possible terrible outcames of using a wi-fi network without a password, like accessing your password or cc info. I wonder if even in iOS all that stuff is available to theft as well, making a VPN a must need in these connections.

It's not really in relation to iOS (or a device that is used) as much as something being on the same network and perhaps being able to intercept data.
