I reserved my iPad but I still plan on getting to the store early before opening for the "special gift" and to see the excitement.

The problem I am wondering about. My apple store is in a mall near me and the store hours state 10am-9pm as with all other stores in the mall.

You think they will have a special opening at 9?

Regular mall hours are irrelevant. Apple says its opening at 9. If in doubt call your Apple Store to confirm.

You're so wrong. If an Apple Store is inside a mall that is locked up then regular mall hours matter. The question is whether you can get to the store without entering through the mall doors or is it outside? For example, Irvine Spectrum in Irvine, Ca is an outdoor mall. Regular mall hours do not matter. Mission Viejo Mall is closed as is the Apple Store as you must enter into the mall itself. Crabtree in Raleigh is the same as Mission Viejo and Southpoint is like the Spectrum.

Notwithstanding any agreement Apple may make with the Mall itself to unlock an entrance into the Mall early for the release of course. I would say you best call your Apple store to find out.

Hey there... maybe you need to do your own homework before you declare someone hilariously wrong b/c you are the one looking silly.

First, OP asked if APPLE would open at 9, not whether the Mall would open before 9.

Second, Apple has agreements with its landlords (mostly Simon Malls) that allows them to open early for special events with advance notice. It why they opened at 7am at all locations when the 3GS was released.

During these Special Event their is typically access into an enclosed mall prior to the Apple Store opening. How much before depends on each mall's management and local zoning rules.

No your wrong, it does not matter what time the malls normal hours are. Apple will get the mail to open its doors before 9 AM and let people go just to the Apple store.

They did this with the iPhone 3GS launch.

If the mall is unwilling then the Apple store will let people in through there back entrance if they have one.

Yes, I agree. This is how it happened with the mall near me!

All our malls unlock their doors 1-2 hours early for the mall walkers. Our local Apple store let's people in starting at 9:00 for Genius Bar appts.

Wow...let's take a step back here. You guys are having a multi post argument about...mall hours.

...seriously?

When Apple launched the iPhone 3G people started arriving at 5:00 AM -- I kid you not! -- and mall security was prepared; they let us in at one particular mall entrance that is fairly close to the Apple store and we began lining up. By the time the store opened there was a very, very long line snaking all the way through the mall to one of the other entrances and around the outside of one of the buildings. I went to the Apple store last year when the 3GS launched but didn't go as early. Because they had the preorder system in effect there were two lines and neither was as long as I'd seen in either 2007 (original, first iPhone) or the 3G. This was at Tysons Corner Mall in Northern Virginia. Even though I've reserved my iPad I plan to be there early because I want to be sure to be able to buy the accessories i want. Not planning to be there at 5:00 AM, though!

Exactly. A mall's official "opening time" is usually just when all of the stores open. Many malls actually open their outside doors long before that for one reason or another.

Also, just because a mall's official opening time may be 10:00, at least at our malls you will find some stores opening earlier when they have special sales. I noticed last week Penny's opened at 9:00 for a sale, though the rest of the stores were closed. The shops that sale food and coffee always open early.

To answer the question (or at least post something relevant) the Apple stores have always opened up early and do so before other stores in the mall open. Mall doors open early for the mall walkers (those people DO exist!), but to be absolutely certain ... call your local Apple store in a couple weeks ... or keep arguing online. Either way

Southpoint is an indoor and outdoor mall, but yes, the Apple Store is outside.

That said, I'm fairly sure the Southpoint mall did non-standard entrance availability hours for the (indoor) GameStop when WoW/Wrath of the Lich King launched at midnight.

So yes, as a group we have proven conclusively that the OP needs to just call the store.

Also keep in mind that this situation is not an obscure one for Apple Stores. Most Apple Stores allow you to make One-To-One appointments at 7:00am, even though the store's official opening time is 10:00am. Malls frequently have their doors open hours prior to official opening time, and many malls even have a select number of stores that open hours prior to others (i.e. my mall has a Starbucks that opens at 6AM, which means at least one set of doors are open at 6).
