So I'm still in the stoneage(dialup), yes, so the only thing wireless I have is my laptop with it's airport extreme. I really want to use OpenSSH for a few goodies now that my phone is re-jailbroken after a 4-5 month hiatus.
If I can't use my laptop, what are my options? Go buy a cheap wireless router and hook it up somehow? Sorry, I live in an area with no cable internet and while I think it's crazy, I can use my laptop if I need any large file downloads or uploads at the local coffee shop.

thanks!

Yes, you can use your laptop to ssh into your phone. I use my laptop all the time. Since you are on dial up, transferring files between your phone and your laptop might take a little while.

I know it might be an inconvenience, but maybe you can just go to the coffee shop, like you mentioned, when you need to ssh into your phone.

I've never done it period, so I wasn't going to try and figure it out for an hour if it's not even possible. I don't really need/want to do much, but I guess if I can figure it out, then yeah, may head down to the coffee shop and give it a go. I'll mess with it in a little bit and see if I can actually get to my phone and if it's as easy as it seems, I just might spend a little time today drinking some coffee. It's pouring outside, not much else to do...

The laptops that are listed in your sig should both have built-in wifi.

Go to the wifi icon in your menu bar, and create a virtual network.

You will not connect to the internet this way, but your laptop will send out a signal that your iPhone can connect to.

As long as you have openSSH installed and set to [on] on your phone, you can use a Mac equivalent of something like iPhoneBrowser for Windows, which lets you SSH through USB. There's gotta be some kind of iphone tunneling/browsing software out there for Macs for sure..

great, that's what I needed. The iBook has been sold actually, but the tiBook is still around, so I'll see what I can do.

thanks!

umm why would having a dial up internet connection have any speed impact on sending a file over a local network.

Well, I'm in my phone now, lol. Thanks, tons easier than I was expecting. Though since I my laptop battery is dead and a pain in general, think I'm gonna pick up an airport extreme card at some point and make this a little easier on myself.

I appreciate the help!
