I guess the folks at Opera think their new mini browser (in beta), makes any phone equivalent to an iPhone. So much so they decide to make their own "Get a Mac" spoof.

Opera Mini vs. iPhone

Typically, I like the spoofs of Mac commercials, but this one is pretty lame. I guess the iPhone is just a phone with a fancy Web browser and nothing else. Thanks for the enlightenment.

(That should be "ads" not "adds" in the title. Me + spelling + typing = not so good.)

I love how they say it's free and then the disclaimer on the homepage says:

To fully access the internet with Opera Mini, a Data Plan from your mobile service provider might be required. Please contact your service provider for more information. The service is not available to Verizon Wireless subscribers yet.

I know that by itself it's free, but you need to be able to have a data plan in order to use it, which is kind of what a data plan is about - using the web. I think I'm correct, but I might not be, isn't that how iPhone's Safari (which what should be the title of the vid too) works as well? I point one thing out and you call me a fanboy, a bit quick to the trigger eh? I thought the video was cute overall.

That's exactly what I'm saying. You made it sound like Opera was charging for something the phone company charges you for.

Oh no, I was just pointing out that you need to sign up for a data plan to use the web, which kind of makes it not free. But I guess if you already have a data plan, go have a blast :p I love Opera on my Wii :)
 
The video's terrible! I'm all for poking fun at Apple's ads, but this was just embarrassing.

As for the Opera browser, I just downloaded it and played around with it -- and while much better than my phone's current browser, it's still WAY too time-consuming to scroll through an average page or input anything. It's such a drag, that I don't see why I'd ever use it unless for something that just couldn't wait until later. Meanwhile, on an iPhone, I can see myself surfing the net all the time -- just like I'd do on my macs.

Yeah, Opera's free -- but even that's not worth it to me. ;)
 
No, they are comparing Opera Mobile to the iPhone browser. I've been playing with it for a while and I really like the way to navigate around. Is it as good as the iPhone? Of course not. But for those who don't have an iPhone this is great.
 
I've never understood the Opera hype. The Symbian on the Nokia E62 is the most superior mobile web browser I've ever used. Also, that commercial is lame and the actors suck. It's so pitifully sad to see competitors scramble to hold on to their little technology/customers like people preparing for a hurricane. All of their customers are gonna wash away to the iPhone...not, geesh.

Some are probably like my co-worker and I. We're going to hold on to our phones with better functionality AND buy the iPhone.
 
Meh...it was alright, but the iPhone does more then just Safari...and Safari on iPhone is leagues ahead of Opera Mini, in usability. They focuses on getting the browser, not how good it was.


Opera does some nice stuff(DS Web Browser is impressive), but their product(Opera Mini) is in a different league then Safari on the iPhone.

iPhone has standard, high end hardware. Apple can build Safari around iPhone(touch screen, powerful CPU(for a phone_, big screen) while Opera has to be able to work on tons of phone, which means it will use less of an "special" features your phone as.


Kind of pointless, as Safari and Opera Mini in two different markets, really.

Still a good idea by Opera, using Apple Mac vs PC adds against them
 
you cant compare a phone to a web browser... you have to compare web browser to web browser.

opera is stupid and slow, Firefox FTW!

their points were
Safari cost more (in my opinion its free for mac/pc/iphone)
can use on any phone (safari can be used on mac & pc & iphone)
doesnt talk about any features that were better then the iphone verison of safari (i think its because its not as good)

Here's the thing.

Safari can't be used on all phones, that was their point.
iPhone safari doesn't have Flash or Javascript. Opera Mini is getting it.

ads are to advertise what you have. again they didnt add any information on flash because they dont have it implemented yet.

why do i want opera on all phones when opera sucks on a computer that has more capability then a phone.
 
Anybody that uses Apples own commercial format to spoof them is lame and uncreative. It was funny the first time, but everyone after that is pretty much a crock.
 
They are pretty much comparing apples to oranges in that commercial. That's like having a commercial comparing OS X to an AMD processor. It's not comparable to one another at all. COMPLETELY different product - Opera(Software) being compared to iPhone(hardware)??? Their marketing team was WAY off. I think it's great that people do spoofs of the "Get a Mac" commercials...I just hope that some day they will be funny.
