Operating temp for imac (2007) model

Hello,

I have a two 20' ALU iMac's. One was bought in 2007 and one in 2008.
Both are in the same office. The 2007 model gets really hot on the Alu casing on the top but the 2008 model does not.
Using Istat the temps measured in the 2007 model were at least 10 degrees hotter than the 2008 model.
Is this normal?

And does it matter that it's hotter?
 
If you want to keep it cooler, download SmcFanControl and speed the fans up.

How hot did the '07 model run? '07 can have some parts which runs hotter than '08 model eg. GPU or CPU can be way hotter.

my istat figures show temps 0f 66 deg. on the GPU Diode.
This is the highest of the figures with fans running at
CPU = 1199
Hard Disk = 1239
Optical Drive = 998

The top of the imac is hot to the touch, where as my other imac is cool to touch having both been running in the same room for the same amount of time.

I will look at SMC fan control and see if it helps, but other than that could there be a fault here?

66 celsius? That's quite hot, but I think there's nothing wrong in your Mac. Do you run any heavy apps on your iMac when it gets hot? Of course you can what's your CPU usage so you can see if it's the problem (if it's near 100% all the time it will produce more heat).

Download SmcFanControl and boost the fans for ~3000rpm and let 'em run for few hours and then look at temps
 
Can you also post a little more detail. Which exact models do you have (i.e. processor, graphics card, RAM, etc.)

Are these temps when the computers are idle? Surfing?

Also the GPU diode is different than your CPU. The GPU is your graphics card, CPU is your processor. Post all temps iStat gives you, please.

Depending on which GPU you have, temps in the 60 range are not outrageously hot.

So, after 9 hours of being up and running but idle (nothing much happening just running the desktop)

CPU = 57
GPU = 62
GPU Diode = 67
GPU Heatsink = 63
Ambient = 26
Memory Control...=55
Airport Card = 52
HD Bay = 50

This is a imac 20' with
2 Ghz Core 2 Duo processor.
4GB of RAM, 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM
ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT graphics card.

Did you download SmcFanControl yet? I did few hours ago and bumped HD fan to 2800rpm, optical's fan to 1500 and CPU's to 1800. My HD was over 50 celsius before speeding up the fans and now it's around 40 celsius. Can't hear more noise really because I'm listening music at the same time and when I let it go idle I switch it to default setting so it's not making any noise at all.

I have downloaded the fan control and have set mine to the RPM's same as yours.
I can see the temp is dropping.
I will give it an hour or two and report back.

Good, hope that it helps. I also made "Ultimate cooling" setting and put all settings almost as high as possible for fast cooling. Of course it's hard to cool down already hot computer so when you wake up/turn on your Mac it will run cooler when fans are blowing faster. All my temps are now ~10 celsius cooler than it was before.

Excellent.
Shame about the fan noise !
Perhaps I am too sensitive to it.

Next I will see if it heats up as much after waking from sleep.

You can change the fan speeds at any time. I used my "cooling" setting for few hours when I was doing heavy photoshopping and I couldn't open the window because of the sunlight and my iMac was nice and cool. It's been on for 10 hours now and I changed the setting back to default and it's still cool (window is open now and night is coming).

Listen some music or something so you can't hear the fans

well that seems to work very well, my CPU A temp is now 35 instead of 57 !
I see how you can save settings and turn switch them easily.
It's a nice piece of software, thanks for suggesting it.
