I'm thinking about selling my 2010 Mac Pro for a 5K iMac, I own a 2013 Mac Pro i just recently bought earlier this year and I never own an iMac before just wondering will it be a good idea to sell my old mac pro

Spec's are

2.93GHz 12-Core
32GB of Ram
2TB HD
ATi 3GB 7970
Mac OS X Yosemite

I wouldn't sell it. The cMP is a good powerful and flexibility machine for upgrade.

Why would you want to sell your Mac Pro? Is the performance feeling sluggish? I introduced a few affordable upgrades to my Mac Pro - SSD, RAM and new GFX - and it feels very snappy. I recently got a Marvell 6GB PCI-E controller so now I'm getting better speeds after breaking through the onboard 3GB bottleneck.

If I were to sell my current Mac Pro, I really wouldn't know what Mac to upgrade to as neither the new iMac nor the new Mac Pro appeals to me. Different design and user philosophies which I don't really like. The Hackintosh route would probably be where I end up.

Do you need two machines? I see you have both a 2010 cMP and a 2013 nMP. Do you just want the new iMac because it is new or because your workflow requires a 4K/5K display?

As you already has the nMP, unless you really need a 5K display, or higher single core performance. I can't see other reason (from your post) why you "need" the 5K iMac. It's more like you "want" the 5K iMac.

In this case, you don't need other fact to support your decision. Just buy what you like, and sell whatever you don't need it anymore.

The new iMac will smoke your old macpro in everything but rendering, simulation or heavily multithreaded tasks, so if your workflow will not benefit from having many core it will be a better choice. Just turn on your activity monitor and look how many times you are using all of the available core during an average working day, if they are not working at full load a good part of the time then you will be better served by a machine with fewer much faster core.

I think it's advisable you keep your classic 12 core Mac Pro. I've used 3 iMacs the past years and usually the corners of the screen gets those dark smudges. It's a hassle to bring it to the service center even with AppleCare still active. Also the 5k iMac is new hardware and untested as it may have glitches of bugs later on. Probably gauge what benefits you will get from the 5k iMac. A guy is making a review on the 5k iMac and he discovered the 5k iMac's flash drive is slower than the new Mac Pro's flash drive HERE

It will also depend on what work you do with your Macs though you already have 2 Mac Pros which is more than adequate.

It depends on if you need two computers, and what you use it for. Personally if I had a 12Core cMP I would keep it and just upgrade to a PCIe SSD, and new GPU like the GTX 970, since for multi-core work, and 3D, even OpenCL the the upgraded Mac Pro would be far faster than the 4.0Ghz iMac.

The iMac does have the advantage of the 5K display and better single core performance though, but is weaker on everything else.

The Top iMac GPU, the m295x would also at best be a match to your current 7970.

Keep the 5, 1, upgrade the GPU and put some PCI-E flash blades or a PCI-E SSD in there. If you're desperate for Ultra HD, 4K monitors aren't even that expensive anymore.

The 7970 is pretty damn good! Get SSDs or PCIe SSD blades for the biggest perceivable bump in performance.

And if you really want more CPU grunt, upgrade to two 6-core 3.46GHz X5690s. Done!

Given your nMP setup, you could get some cash for that cMP. The 12 core nMP is the only model that is faster than the 2x 6@2.93GHz (what I have). Yesterday I upgraded to an R9 280X and I'm very happy. One reason for me to keep it is I use an ultra high quality firewire audio cable for recording, and the nMP doesn't have it and I don't want to run my pristine signal chain through a cheap thunderbolt adapter.

as i have pc with i7-4790k and r9 290, and 12c 2.93 cmp.

i can confirm you will be happily with cmp more than 4790k-ish.

hackintosh would absolutely be the last on my list for any option whatsoever

i already fear that my cpu upgrades will cause boot issues, i can only imagine what fear i had turning on a hackintosh everytime...

especially on new updates for the OS

You know you can upgrade the CPUs for about $400 and it will be just as fast as a nMP right?

Aw come on, this, IMHO, is a silly thread:eek: If the OP doesn't realize the value of his 5,1 let him sell it, or as the OP put it sale it????? Or does he mean sail it?????

You should sell it for sure. I'll give you $1100 + shipping. Please list it in the Marketplace section so we can complete the transaction ;)

It's up the OP - if he wants to get rid of his professional grade Macintosh and buy a consumer grade iMac for the 5k screen and its fine for the uses the OP requires then why not.

If I was going to do anything that resembled long hard work on the CPU and GPU that's a different story..

Sold

I sold my 2010 Mac Pro for $2,400 not bad for a 4 yrs old computer

Superb price for your old one. Just remember to get AppleCare and not do anything too GPU/CPU cooking related on it - you have a 6,1 for all that! :D
