Opinion: Does this qualify as uneven backlighting?

I think my 2.33gHz MBP is flawless, and I've never had a problem with it. But I do notice it aging a tad bit on the inside, but nothing major. I do, however, raise my eyebrow at the backlighting of my computer. I'm starting to do more professional photos, and I want every aspect of my picture "picture perfect." Take a look at these pics I took, is this considered uneven backlighting? If so, do you think Apple can help me out?

I do believe that is uneven backlighting. The best thing to do is to go to the genius bar and see if they will help you. I got a MacBook Pro display replaced when that wasn't even the main thing it was being serviced for, so I have had good luck with Apple replacing displays.

It is not so much the backlighting I think, but the narrow viewing angles.

Is yours a 15" or 17" model? That is one aspect of the old screens that drove me nuts.

my problem is/was very similar. it was super super white from the middle/bottom of the screen, thus making the corners seem darker. the top and sides were fine. It's almost worse with the LEDs because uneven backlighting before was never ultra white in the hot spot, so now it's even more noticeable.

I called Apple and arranged for a new one. They wanted to do a 'capture' on mine to have engineers see the screen and see how they might tackle the issue... (uh huh. kick LG in the pants and tell them to make better screens!)
 
dependign on the panel type those dark gradients you see could just be down to viwing angles, some panels do have odd effects like that.

also CCFL back lights do fade over time

and its likely a TN panel, which probably means 6bit per colour channel (262k colours dithered to 16.2million) that puts them on the bottom rung for any serious photo work.

Oh you have never seen the old ones.

Sure these ones are not flawless, but they are pretty damned damned good.

Oh I had a pretty bad one at work for over a year - I hear ya on this.

This definitely looks like a non-uniform lighting issue though and the LED back-light was supposed to fix it. The 15" is small enough that in uniform lighting from a square angle to the screen it should be evenly lit if the back-light is uniform.

I can also tell that it's not a limited viewing angle just by comparing my GF's new SR MBP to my own. Hers has no "hot spot" along any of the edges, so the corners look as bright as the rest. From what I can see, it looks like some of the back-light is escaping from the bottom of the screen, maybe it's as simple as needing to block out the edge a little bit more, and that light casts more light in the area, making the corners darker. If I look DOWN on the panel from above, I can see a line of bright white light on the bottom center edge of the panel. So basically at least on my new MBP, it seems that it's almost "foreground lighting" that is causing the uneven lighting, not an uneven back-light per say.

Does any of this make sense? Difficult to explain.
