My wife wants an iPad for Chriistmas. Awesome. I happen to think the iPad needs a camera for voice chat, and want to wait to see if a new iPad comes out before Christmas with a camera like that.

But 2 things concern me...

1. I "may" get laid off, and can get an iPad now....and at Christmas I may not have the money.

2. If a new iPad does come out with a camera, any time near Christmas, it could sell out before I get one for her.

I was at the Apple store today and did not buy one... and now I am having at least a small amount of regret.

Thoughts?

Based on the way other iDevices are released, there is pretty much 0 chance of a new iPad being released before March/April of next year. They will probably announce them sometime in late Jan or Feb.

1. If you think you may lose your job then you have bigger issues to worry about than affording an iPad.

2. No chance.

I may, or may not... but I'm not going to lose any sleep over the possibility.

There may not be a new iPad out by Christmas but definitely out by the spring--which is just a few months after that. It will be worth the wait. If you're waiting for Xmas, get her a gift certificate to spend when the new one is released.

I mean no offense, ovrird, but I see this particular sort of speculation in these threads all the time, and it always sort of blows my mind... :)

In my opinion, Apple will not, under any circumstances, announce the next generation iPad before it actually hits the shelves for sale, or right before it does.

Case in point, the rumoured iPod Touch refresh coming tomorrow. Did they announce it in June or July? Did they announce it at all??? No, and no.

If they ever announced these refreshes weeks or months before they were due, the current sales of existing products would grind to a halt. The only reason we knew about the iPad months before it was available for sale is because it was brand new, and there were no iPads in existence for sale anywhere.

The bottom line is, Apple wants to sell existing product until the last second the new ones come out. It's this way with Macs, with iPods, with iPhones, and yes, it will be this way with the iPad, as well. There will be rumours, and then bam! New iPads!

I do agree with you 100% about March or April 2011, though. :)

Or one could buy iPad now, and get six~seven months use out of it before a new one is released.

Amen. No new iPad coming for Christmas. The "refresh" will come in March/April 2011. I made the leap last month. WAS going to wait.

Why wait? There is ALWAYS another new model down the road.

No offense taken, I totally agree with you. I think what I meant to say was that Jan/Feb at the earliest is when we will hear real evidence of a new one coming. I probably shouldn't have been so optimistic with the whole "announce" thing.

No worries, and thanks for the kind response, friend! And yes, I totally agree with you that Jan/Feb will be prime time for some juicy iPad2 murmurrings around these parts leading up to a March or April release.

To own one is to love the iPad as-is, though, and to the OP, if you have the means to pick one up now, I say go for it. It will enrich your life and you'll get lots of use out of it now, next week, next month, and yes, even when the next revision comes out next year...

:)

This is precisely the reason I got my iPad last month. I was waiting for the next version but I know there's pretty much no chance that the new one would be out before the end of the year. Since I can't wait till next year I got the current one to tide me over till the next one comes out. :)

I was pretty much all set waiting for the next iteration of the iPad, but then i realized, life is short and why wait. There will always be a newer better model down the line. I'd say go for it and make your wife happy now instead of at xmas, giving stuff to other people is always a cool thing to do :)

Get it now! This thing is great. Sure, it could use some refinements, but as-is, it's pretty nice. Once ios4 is out, it will be even more awesome.
