Opinions on recent purchase

Ok, so I was in the Apple store the other day, and was needing a new computer for school. The last computer I actually got new was a Macbook in 2007 so decided it was time to move on, and wanted an iMac. Long story short, I got my iMac March 3rd, not thinking that they were suppose to be releasing brand new ones any time now. My question is, I bought the 1499$ (plus my student discount so 1399$) but with 4GB 1TB and 512MB ram with a 3.2 Ghz i3. I have until March 17th to return it, should I wait until the 15th or so and see if anything has been announced or should I wait until the 15th and return it anyways and wait until the new ones come out? I was torn between the MacBook Pro and the iMac because I really wanted the i7 but at the same time I wanted something that had a stand alone video processor, but that wasn't more then 1500$. Any opinions you guys have would be awesome!!!

Basically I am asking I guess is am I looking at an i7 and some extra ram and maybe some more vram with a new one? I have read around the net and have not found really much about it, figured if anyone knew you guys would!
 
I would take it back and hold out for the new release if you can. I am in the same boat. I bought the 2.93 ghz imac about a week ago and had some screen issues so it is going back this week. I am going to wait for the new release and just use my macbook pro until then. It all depends on what will make you happy in the long run. Yoh need to end up with what you really wAnt even if that means waiting a few months.

Not to mention, if you wait until the refresh the computer you just bought will be even cheaper.
 
I would return it, and here is why.

The new update is coming, which is fine and dandy, but if you NEED a computer now, buy now, but go refurb. For what you spent you can get a 27".

Buy now or wait, but if you buy now go refurb, you get MUCH more for your $$$.

Watch out on the refurbs....i bought a 27" 2.93 and had the yellow tinge across the whole bottom. I chose to retuen the unit and wait for the new release. Its not worth it to play the replacement game for months.
 
Is it necessary to have a reason to return it? Or just say I got home and changed my mind? I have never returned anything at the apple store so I don't know.

No you do not need a reason. It is a 14 day no questions asked policy. They might ask you out of curiosity. Be aware, there is a re-stocking fee. I forget what the percentage is.

ALL iMac's can have the yellow tinge, thats how it works. that's not refurb specific, you shouldn't make claims like that if you don't know.

FWIW the new release will 99% likely use the same display, so your new iMac is just as likely to suffer from that problem as this model. Refurbs are excellent values and unless I am buying an apple product day 1 when I can't get a refurb (which, admittedly I do often!) I'll get a refurb.
 
Ok cool, I will probably just wait until the 12th or the 13th and use it for a little while and go return it. I bought AppleCare with it as well, do I return that, or do I keep it for the next computer? I am probably not going to buy one of the newest models unless they are amazing, and will probably just order a refurb 27" with the quad core i5 or i7 and 1GB VRAM, which ever they drop closest to this computers price range.

I think you are wrong to some extent. For one, even the apple care reps don't acknowledge the yellow tinge. When I called to return mine the rep stated he had never even heard of it. I told him to google it because he is behind the ball. In my opinion, Apple is not taking it as being a serious problem so when they test out these refurbs before resale they let ALOT of the returned units with yellow tinge slide right back through on to the market. So, the chances of you getting a refurb with yellow tinge are much greater than your chances when buying a new one. Of course, the new iMacs can have the tinge as well but the chances are greater on the refurbs. I am almost considering just upgrading my Macbook Pro to a new one and then buying a cinema display instead of waiting for the new iMac which may still have the yellow tinge.

In my opinion, this type of talk about such an expensive product is not right. This yellow tinge should not exist and Apples ignorance of this issue is obsurd.

I agree. I must say it is totally ridiculus and not apple-like to let a 2000$ computer have such issues like a cheap asian streetbuy technique
 
Yellow Tinge

Can someone please elaborate on this yellow tinge issue ?

I have just purchased an Imac 27, 2.8Ghz, quad core intel core, 1T, i5 processor, for my sons birthday and now having read some of the posts I am duly concerned .

What am I meant to be looking for, is it as plain as the nose on my face, is it always there, if I don't see one does that mean that I do not have this issue?

I am also finding that the top of the computer is hot, right across the top where the vent is, is this normal ? I realise that the unit is made from Aluminium, and this may impact that, but a new Apple user I would like to make sure that this is normal.

Should I be overly concerned about new / old models with the purchase that I have made ?

Just search for yellow tinge on this forum. There is a very long thread all about it. The thread also includes pictures to use to test out your screen. I could actually tell my screen had the yellow tinge at the bottom by viewing threads on this very forum. I could open a thread, scroll the page down and watch a post go from bright white to yellow. Horrible.
