im putting together a g3 imac and putting in a 60 gb hd 125 ram at 500 mhz.which operating system should i put in it.ive been pc for 20 years and dont know what this mac can handle

How much ram? 1.25 gb or 125 mb? ;)

I would toss Panther on that if you can, if not try Tiger and if all else fails then OS 9, which is awesome all the same.

i believe tiger wants 256, ram is really cheap for your imac standard pc100 ram should work. I would get it up to 512 and use tiger since you can have the latest web browsers, or if using os9 try classilla, i run tiger on a unsupported ibook 366 non firewire with 576 meg ram and it runs slow but allright, still can use it to get on myspace and stuff.

as OSX tiger (10.4) requires at least 256mb ram
OSX panther (10.3) requires at least 128mb ram
OS9 requires minimum
40 MB of RAM (32 MB of physical RAM, with virtual memory set to at least 40 MB).

but as said by someone else these are only minimum requirements so if you want snappy performance you need to upgrade the ram
the ram is not that expensive , but it has to be mac compatible ,so ask before you buy to avoid disappointment
PC100 SDRAM , PC133 SDRAM is backwards compatible and works too and is sometimes easier to find
and it has to be LOW DENSITY RAM

and i would put OS9 on it for all the old games
and osx of choice , panther will run snappier , but tiger is newer

Which is why I said OS 9. ;)
Plus OS 9 is downright awesome.

Dont expect to handle much of anything.

Do not spend any money to upgrade it. Well, less than $20.

What kind of performance would you expect from a 10 year old PC? Figure about the same for your 10 year old iMac.

the speed is not really important when you buy a iMac g3 ,
The iMac G3 is a cool and cute looking classic Apple Mac
and it has character , its something you want to cuddle ,
and if you really like something you just dont care about
how much it might cost , you just get what you need ,
its like buying a classic car you know they are not
as fast as modern cars , but they still bring you from A to B
and offer loads of fun on the way :)

But the iMac G3 is still able to surf in the internet ,emailing , chatting , use MS office for mac ,
play itunes , you can even download films and watch them
so it is still perfectly usable for every day computing
