Opperating Temperature

I run a college newspaper (all mac office) and school turned on the heat (and its really bad, they're trying to fix it but we still need to work). But according to my CPU temp widget (didn't install it) my 2.7 dual G5s are running at 166 F How hot can my machine get before I start doing damage. We can't afford to loose this investment.

That is about normal for the dual g5's they tend to run kinda hot

My iMac gets up to 180-190F when I'm doing something like playing World of Warcraft.

Thats WAY too hot. Something is up with your iMac. My AMD (with a crappy $5 cooler) runs at 40c and 56c after a 3 hr round of GTA: Vice City.

Unfortunately it is not at all too hot, when compared with other iMacs. Thankfully the weather is cooler, so the room temperature has dropped - hence the iMac peaks in the 170-180 range now.

what are temperatures for PowerBooks... anyone know?


Mine is usually just under 120F... I hoping that is good becaue it sure beats my other laptop (PC though)

I've been wondering the same thing about my Dual 2 ghz powermac. It idles at about 134-140F and peaks at about 160-166F during intensive tasks. The thing that bothers me is that I don't hear the fan speed increase. I used to hear this all the time, but it seems to have stopped when I upgraded from 10.3.4 to 10.3.9. Maybe I need to reseat the fans in the box.

Also, I read somewhere that the G5 chips are designed to run best at 140F.

i wouldn't worry too much. As others have said, the temperature is pretty normal for a G5 Power Mac, and remember too that they're designed to automatically shut themselves down if they reach a temperature point where there's a risk of component damage.

i have seen my 12" 1ghz pb up at about 55C, maybe 60C.

i wouldnt worry, the processors are designed to shut down if everything gets a bit too toasty, and hence stop any damage being done!
