So this is an update to a fairly niche device (the 4.85mm R5). RAM is upped to 3GB and storage doubled to 32gb. Other notable specs are the skinny 2,000mAh battery, powering the 5.2-inch 1080p Amoled display, 13mp Sony camera and lack of 3.5mm jack. CPU remains the Snap 615.

The attraction is obviously the slim factor so don't be expecting much more than 2 hours SOT. Yes, it'll likely be dead by noon if used as a daily by peeps on here! I plan on using it as a secondary device given the battery and for when I want a change from the daily driver.

I'm expecting to receive mine next week. Originally I went for the R5 flash sale two weeks ago (£169) but was then contacted by Oppo asking if I wanted the R5s instead... Double storage and an extra 1GB RAM? Easy decision.

Having handled the R5 last year and thought it was great build and feel but too crippled by the battery, I think it'll be sweet as an alternative for an evening or light day. Or I can VOOC it up if near power.

Looks like a great, stylish phone. I personally just have too many issues with it. I have no interest in a phone that is so thin you need an adapter to use the 3.5mm jack. Of course the Battery Life, and the capacitive menu button is a relic of 2011 and I'm not sure why OPPO still keeps it around.

It is a great looking phone though.

Yeah no increase in price... seems a bit of a bargain or worth a shot at least. I know the battery is iffy but 615/32gb/3gb/1080 Amoled/VOOC/cam/metal build is a compelling proposition.

The skin is an acquired taste - bright and cheerful but with a ton of themes... Mostly odd! The Find 5 was pretty terrible battery wise and took 6 months to fix a thirsty radio, predominantly by killing apps in the background after 5 minutes (a certain chaebol may have been inspired by this approach ).

The Find 7a was way better and a pleasure to use as long as it was the international variant of the ROM. Biggest upside is near weekly updates. Biggest downside is they're slow with underlying Android updates - some still run KitKat but I'd expect this to be in line for Lollipop given its a 'new' release.

The build is exquisite. A real engineering achievement so, regardless of the necessity of such a skinny device, kudos to Oppo for again doing something different. And nothing wrong in admiring something slim . Despite being stupidly thin it is also stupidly solid and surprisingly heavy... Plenty of metal going on here. I'd wager this can take a few hits without much damage.

As for design the back looks nice, camera sticks out of course, the sides great with, but the front is a bit 'bezely'. A consequence of thin perhaps but Oppo have many phones with chunky bezels.

Still, it's great to hold. Other phones that bulge at the back then taper to a thin band/edge don't feel that much different when death gripped. However, you really appreciate the slim factor if you lay it on your fingers rather than wrapping around it. The back is very grippy so i tend to handle it this way without fear of it slipping. And it pockets like no other.

Performance has been very nice. It's running 4.4.4 which is well developed and smooth even with the heavier ColorOS skin. It handles tasks well without slowing down and 3D games like Crazy Taxi and Real Racing 3 work well enough. The SD615 seems more than adequate for most things and it doesn't get too hot despite being slim. 3GB RAM makes a big difference - 2.1GB free on boot but less than 1GB with my usual apps open in the background.

One nice touch is the earpiece doubling as a speaker. Although only one in number, being on the front is nice compared to the bottom or back. Headphones haven't been an issue with the adapter cable on test but I mainly stick to Bluetooth headphones now anyway.

The camera is quick. Lightning fast to focus and shoot. After heavy testing the OP2 last week, the camera here shows how slow the OP2 is to fire. Quality seems very good and to be expected from a Sony sensor and the very nice ColorOS camera software (which can be as basic or complex with manual mode as you desire). Still need to test this more but I'm optimistic of satisfying results.

The 1080/5.2inch Amoled screen is good and has the lovely Amoled blacks which, as a heavy reader, I appreciate at night. Of course Amoled was chosen with the battery in mind....

....Ah the battery. All 2,000mAh of it. It's actually very usable for the average user. Doing everyday tasks at 40% brightness on WiFi I can typically get 3.5-4 hours SOT with 4G closer to 2.5. For comparison I get similar results on the S6 and plenty more on the OnePlus 2. Usually I have a full signal.

The Amoled screen obviously helps and the black OS theme (unlike white on other Oppo devices) is clearly done with the battery in mind.

Let's not pretend some of the power users on here are going to accept this but it's not a device fit those. Fast charging is excellent and 75%, or +1,500mAh in 30 minutes does offer a rapid top up which did work well in practice. It's much less tethered to a power socket than I imagined. Firstly because I'm not a power user typically, and second, because I've always got 10-15 minutes to get 30% back in the tank if needed.

TL;DR - a very nice device not lacking in performance, sufficient for light to medium users. If 2,000mAh makes you cry, try the Note 4 + Zerolemon combination.
