Yesterday I upgraded from a late 2013 iMac to a 2019 iMac. Before I was using an optical cable with a 3.5 adapter to connect to my logitech Z5500 Surround System. Never an issue. Plugged it into my new one an nothing, no digital input says my speaker controller. The Midi setup only say headphone when I plug the cable in. On the old one it would say digital output. I checked the the cable and speakers by plugging it into my MacBook and works fine.

What am I doing wrong.
 
You aren't doing anything wrong.

I believe the reason things aren't working is that the 2019 iMacs NO LONGER HAVE "digital out" (as well as analog) on the 3.5 plug.

If you want an optical-out signal, you're going to have to "get it from somewhere else".

I believe what you need to do is start shopping around for a USB audio extractor. It should offer both analog and digital/optical out.
