...at least not as I expected. I have a Dolby Digital 5.1 capable amp/decoder system with an optical input. When connected to my iMac via optical cable, all I'm getting is stereo PCM 44.1kHz, even when playing DVDs.

Anyone know why this is so? Or does the iMac just not support 5.1?

you have it set in the system preferences to use optical out and you have changed the DVD setting to the 5.1 audio (if it has it, right?)

When you go into dvd player, stop the current DVD then go into the settings for it and tell it to do digtial out.

I've had to alter the sound-out prefs of Apple's DVD player a few times before getting my Z-680 Dolby 5.1 set working as "Dolby Digital" via the optical cable...
But it does work.
