Optimal Photo sizes to import to the iPad?

I picked up a 64gig one last night Soho. Quick question.. I want to import my photography portfolio onto my iPad and want it to look nice(even when zoomed in) but not take up massive space. I know the screen is 768x1024 but I was curious to what sizes everyone is importing their photos?

Im pretty sure iTunes resizes the pictures just like it does for the iPhone. It's done automatically. You dont have to manually do it.

Shady is correct, iTunes will optimize your photos for iPad automatically. You can't control it manually as far as I know.

So would it be better to import 300dpi vs 72dpi photos?

Yes

I import very high resolution pictures from different cameras. Apple documentation says that all photos are "scaled." I have hundreds of photos imported and they look great but take up very little space on the iPad.

I would leave your photos in their original resolution or however you have them currently in iPhoto.

iPad Photo Optimizing

Apple really need to let this information be out in the public domain. Why do they keep it secret? I have a 132 page book which I can share easily as Tiff files in an album, but on my Mac its over one gig, but on the iPad it is just 130 megabytes. I'd love to know what the optimum file size should be so we could let people download the 130 meg version. This could be a new category of a commercially valuable product, if only Apple would let the info out. Why don't they? What have they got to lose by doing so???

to prevent iTunes from scaling should I crop/resize for 1024x768?

I think I had done that for iPhone (480x320 or whatever it is) photos to prevent artifacting and generally ugly conversion but not sure lol
