Optimize storage says save 72gb. But phone says I have 80gb of photos under iPhone storage.

Why are numbers different?

after optimization your photos will occupy about 8 GB on your phone (instead of 80 Gb). That’s the 72 GB save. There will be 80 Gb of iCloud space occupied holding your original photos and pictures.

Wonder why my old phone said 90gb of photos… im thinking maybe had to do with the iOS 15 bugs with storage amounts. Or maybe it took the photos in messages into consideration

I envy ya'll who have an iCloud photo library small enough to fit completely on your phone. :)

That said, in my personal experience Apple has been pretty good about keeping your library more or less fully accessible with "optimize storage" turned on. I have a 300GB library and it is only using about 2.83GB of storage on my phone for about 30K photos. I can turn on Airplane Mode and browse my library pretty freely; anything taken in the last few months is fairly high resolution, and older stuff still looks good even at reduced quality.

The only thing that's missing completely are very old videos, but that's understandable since they take a lot of space.
