Is optimizing storage an automatic thing? I don't want to use this feature and was wondering if this is something that happens on its own?

you better check that.

you can check:

apple menu/system pref/icloud/icloud drive/ look at bottom to see if optimize mac storage is marked as on or off
I go to that but I don't even have icloud drive checked mark. So I'm good right? It's not even on to work?

you mean, that box is checked?
its checked by default as you can now see.

anyway, un-check it. even though you have not clicked on Desktop and Documents folder to iCloud.

It's not checked. So I don't have to worry about my Mac sending files to the cloud?

the Optimization check box actually would be responsible for deleting the files from your local disk, actually, after it claims or thinks that they are safe in the cloud, if, it thinks your local disk is sort of full.(this is actually the way you need to think about this one, since i have nowhere seen the actual rules and timing about lack of recent use that would cause files to be deleted from a local hard disk)
the check box that would actually be responsible for sending the files is the one that says you want to store your Desktop and Documents files in the cloud. but you have not checked that one, so not to worry.
