Opting to switch from 15” to mini

so my faulty i9 has been refunded and i’m not to keen on getting another one.

From the money i get back i can get a loaded mac mini + either mbp13” or the new air.

Four configs come to mind:
i7 with either 8/16gb ram, and either 512/1TB ssd.

If i get 8, i will swap it myself but im afraid of voiding warranty

512/1tb drive because 1tb has 30% better write speeds and i could migrate my whole old system back.

Laptop doesn matter. Might get a stock config

Audio production!
I sometimes (less and less) need to work on location (recording) for which any mac laptop will do,
but i also need a laptop for live music setup.

My 2012 15" quad handled that fine - but the Air is just a dual-core, i might be pushing it for the live setup.

iPad wouldn't cut it. software wise. pro could probably cut it if it could run logic. (GB for iOS is not an option)

Mini + your choice of a nice monitor (32"+ works well in the native 3840x2160 resolution, with lots of real estate, but an even larger 4k UHD monitor would be even nicer or even a 5k monitor). If you go this route, get the USB-c --> Displayport cable on the Apple accessories site. Moshi's cable is the first VESA 5k certified cable.

thinking of LG Ultrafine 4k, direct to USB-C. I have a caldigit TS3+ left over from my 15" i can reuse

Mini + retina air sounds like a great pairing. $2500 gets the base of both plus extras for a finished system under 3 grand.

6 cores at the desk, 3lbs for the road, they share accessories. And you’ve got a whole spare Mac if anything happens.
