As most of us will be installing either 8gb or 16gb RAM modules into our iMacs, what are the options to get rid of the 2x4GB default apple ram modules? Are these worth anything in the aftermarket?

Not really. RAM prices have plummeted recently. 8GB RAM (2x4GB) can easily be found for less than £30. 8GB DIMMs seem even cheaper than 2x4GB.

So if you were to sell it, you could possibly do it on the advantage that 'it's genuine Apple RAM!' (even though this doesn't make a blind bit of difference). Personally I'd just keep it stored for diagnostics purposes. You'd get ~£20 if lucky on eBay, and that's before the fees.

Unless you're contemplating installing 32-64 GB, you could always leave Apple's memory installed.

From what I know, Apple uses RAM from various manufacturers and doesn't even bother to rebrand them. So all you could sell it as is RAM that was once delivered with an iMac.
But since I'll hardly get much for the effort of selling it, I'm just going to keep it for when I might sell my iMac. It might not make much of a difference whether you still have it if you found a private buyer. But if you are going to sell it to a company that specialises in reselling used iMacs, it's much easier if it doesn't deviate from what you received originally.
