Oracle on the Mini

Anyone running Oracle 10g database on their Mac Mini? I assume the latest Mac Minis (and iMacs) can handle this version of Oracle.

This month's Oracle magazine talks about the latest version of Oracle just released for Mac OS, release 10.2.0.4.0. No charge. For those of us would-be DBAs who want to futz with a down-scaled version of this state-of-the-art database used by most large corporations.

Maybe another compelling reason for going with the faster Mac Mini 2.26 over 2.0?

I guess I shouldn't be surprised at no comments to this. Looks like everyone here is only interested in the games, videos, and other self-indulging home entertainment aspects of Mac.

Probably just not a whole lot of people running Oracle on macs (more likely postgresql/mysql).

Mac OS X is 10g certified, so some version of oracle should run. Managing Oracle versions and patches requires reading through 3,000 pages of interoperability matrices and a sledgehammer. Performance wise, for testing no question the mac mini is enough.

I didn't know there was a free version or demo of oracle you could play with. My last org had to pay $25k per cpu for a test license.

Yes, this free version just became available for the Mac. In reading the platform requirements, looks like Leopard is a base requirement for this version. I remember many years ago, Oracle provided an Oracle Lite database version for the Mac, but had since abandoned the Mac platform until returning just now.

MySQL is popular and useful for the PC/Mac. But I'd think if someone wants to learn and use SQL and also be proficient in the latest database technology, Oracle on the Mac would go a longer way for personal and professional value for any job related endeavors. It's also a lot of fun and a heck of a lot more useful than playing games (IMHO) .
