Well, first off, I know about Orb. I use it on my PC, to stream over Wi-Fi to my Wii. So that's not the focus of this thread.

I am planning on buying an iPhone 3G (not 3GS) soon, probably while 16GB ones are still in stock. I am a broke teen, so I was hoping that I could pick up an 8GB one, and use Orb to stream the rest of my media. How well does Orb work over Wi-Fi/3G/Edge? I probably will be using it over Wi-Fi mostly.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)

Wifi, awesome cellular network average...

Orb doesnt do very well. It has a hard time figuring out the optimal speed

Not what you asked but still I couldnt resist. Broke or not, if you can pay 70+$/month for an iPhone plan, saving 50-100$ doesnt sound like a great idea to me. Now if they had cheaper plans available with the 3G then I`d understand as there would be considerable savings over the next 24 months. But that is not the case. I think the 50 or 100$ premium over the 8/16GB 3G is very much worth it.

Really? That's strange. I've been using Orb since it came out for the iPhone and I don't have any problems at all. I've got a 16gb iPhone 3G but can easily watch over 100gb's of my favorite movies streaming from my computer using Orb. In my opinion, it's one of the best apps available for the iPhone/Touch.

It worked great for me on my moto q. Albeit it didn't have an app but a web page. I also think the server app has gotten worse over time.

I think between orb and slingbox (for live tv ), I'll take my sling. Now, if they would just release the 3.0 jailbreak so I can again stream over non wifi.

Orb Live is great. I've never had issues with the connection on wifi or 3G. What I like most about it is how easy it is to listen to Sirius online. Other apps let you do it but Orb Live is by far the best. So if you have Sirius I would get Orb. If you don't it's still an amazing app.

What did you use pre-3.0 to use Sling on 3G voipover3g or tricker3g?

There's a free version of Orb in the App Store. The only real difference between that and the real one is it only shows you 3 items in each category (movies, music, etc.) instead of your whole library. Either way, give this a shot and see how it works for you before you buy it. I think it really depends on your location.

Orb live cannot hold a candle to "Pocket Tunes" for listening to Sirius.

Both work fine. Voipever3g is harder to setup since you have to mod the plist with the appid you want to trick. Tricker has a bunch of apps that you want tricked already in there, sling included.

When the hell is OrbLive coming out for the Mac? That is the only thing keeping me back from buying the $9.99 iphone app. I don't want to pay $.99 and $1.99 and $5.99 for apps that each do video / photo / audio streaming separately. This is killing me!

On that note, to the OP after much time I have decided that Orb Live is a great app. You need a pretty solid (wired preferred) internet connection on your server (computer) side when doing things like webcam streaming though. Audio quality is great, and browsing your music is about as quick as one would expect considering its over the air.

Streaming over Edge yields decent quality audio, but connection timeouts and buffering before you can listen to the audio can become tiresome, especially in a moving vehicle.

Orb has a search function for large libraries, and with the appropriate hardware and a little knowhow eg; port forwarding, you can live stream whatever your tv tuner card is hooked up to on your home computer.

I've used ootunes radio, simplify media (and 2.0), and a few others and nothing is as seamless and well made as Orb Live.

Air Video

I used to be a big fan of Orblive until Air Video came out...

Air Video kicks Orb's ass streaming Videos over 3G. Its crystal clear and it has see option which Orb has but doesnt work...

Air Video is just for Videos and does not have live tv or audio... The cost is considerably less (3$) and they have an awesome customer support. They update their products frequently and provide updates... (Orb sucks when it comes to update or customer support)...

If you are looking to stream video most of the time just get Air Video without a thought... I plays stuff from my external HDD and also from itunes playlist...
