Very sorry to hear about this! I was surprised when UPS delivered our two new iPhones. The driver left them on the front porch, rang the doorbell and left. I thought a signature would be required. Anyway hope you get this resolved quickly!
I've been saying this forever. Way back with Sprint, you had to enter SS last four to unlock it. I think VZW even makes you put in Acct PIN.New devices should be starting shipped with some kind of account locking. If you get it from Apple, then Apple ID locked, if from a carrier, phone-number locked. At least for the first-time activation.

Can someone tell me if UPS is still doing signature required his time? I know they always have here in the past but wondering if they still are cuz if so, when mine gets here, Im definitely not going to sign if the box feels light or tape looks tampered with. And if it is, getting the UPS drivers name.
I believe the phone number locked through carrier is and has been in place for quite a while as long as I can remember, whether you get it from apple as a carrier financing or iup. It comes up with activating the carrier and does ask for your last 4 digit ssn or the pin you use for carrier.New devices should be starting shipped with some kind of account locking. Which is why I have stuff like this delivered to either my office or just send it to the nearest UPS store for hold.
This has been my experience lately, too. Not only do Apple devices not get a requested signature at my house, but I have bought some expensive audio equipment very recently, much more valuable than an iPhone, and all packages were sent signature required because of their high value. I caught the UPS guy a couple times on those items by watching the Follow My Delivery, and when I went running outside after he put the packages on my porch and was headed for his truck, he told me he had signed for me. I mean, WTH?! A clearly insured, signature-required package, and they can just sign off? That is not what the contract states. It's not right! USPS did it to me, too, on an item I bought from EBay that was insured and signature required. I caught the mail person also, and she said, "I figured you were home so I signed it." What on earth. And who will suffer the most in the end? The customer. And small businesses who put their trust in these companies delivering properly, too. I don't know what we can do to protect ourselves but direct everything to a customer center at this point.
ETA: OP, I'm really sorry this happened to you. What a hassle and disappointment. I hope they make it right for you.
Having it delivered to a store guarantees that if you open it right there in-store, there is no questioning. You opened it right there.I think that doesn't matter. I believe the issue is, it's being stolen AT the carrier/with delivery. Not after delivery. So it doesn't matter where it's delivered, someone is stealing it prior.
Designed in California no less!at least you got a box
UPDATE!: Finally got my phone.
Just some background for those asking, I had the original package held at the ups customer center. They gave me an empty box with the return label in it. I called Verizon and the supervisor told me that they mailed me just the trade in kit and that the phone will come separately (spoiler alert, she was wrong).
I ended up having to sort things out with Verizon on the phone for 4 hours. Nobody could understand that the iPhone was stolen and what to do next. They told me that they would open an investigation and that it should hear back in about a WEEK.
After getting nowhere with customer service, I emailed the executive office customer service email. I got an amazing executive assistant that sorted everything out for me and had my phone sent out next day, even though it was back ordered 2 weeks at this point. He gave me his email and his direct extension if I needed anything else, and waived the upgrade fee. He was fantastic and made everything so easy (I won’t give his name out for his privacy).
It’s a shame I had to email the executive office to get this sorted out, but I’m glad this fiasco is finally over.
