A little customizing it looks like. Sweet.

The hard part will be the wait! ;)

I wonder why theres such a long wait. I thought they were shipping already?
Standard configurations are shipping now.

Customized take time.

Guessing here, but the demand for the 3GHz Xeons may be higher than Apple anticipated which may be leading to some of the delay.

The delay is for the X1900 card

Is it possible to use a regular X1900 XT card from a PC? Or in fact, as the macpro uses an Intel Chipset motherboard can you run any kind of GPU? I know there would be a driver issue in OS X, but if you were running windows on a Macpro could you use any card and just download the Windows XP driver from ATi or Nvidia?

Identical to the one I ordered except for the RAM. Apple seems to soak you on RAM prices so I got the stock 1GB and will buy Crucial later.

The delay is also for the Airport/Bluetooth module - supposedly it is a new module just created for this release, and has both the airport and bluetooth built into one device. These push the ship date back anywhere from 2-5 wks as I've been hearing and noticing on the store. Apple Store 5th Ave said they may have them in 2 weeks.

2 modules...

The Airport is now a PCI Express card (or a mini card based on it), the bluetooth a standard USB module (which may be a new shape.)

The Airport antenna is new, but the Airport card is a whole new ball of wax compared to the last Mini PCI version.

Why would you customize it with a SMALLER hard drive? Does it really save that much money?

I save around $70, which will buy me a 250 GB hard drive at Fry's...so I've basically got a 160 GB hard drive for free (depending on how you look at it).

The real idea, is that I was planning on getting a smaller sized external USB 2.0 hard drive for my girlfriend's iTunes (she just got her first Mac laptop and is ripping her 700+ CD collection).

So now, I can used the saved money to get the 250 gig hard drive, take the 160 and put it in a $30 USB 2.0 enclosure...and be a hero! :)

I thinks it's just the airport card. If you choose JUST airport it extends the delay to 2-4 weeks. This doesn't happen if you choose just bluetooth.

Canader eh
Yeah I ordered

3Ghz
2gb RAM
160GB HD
2xSuperdrives

Then I placed another order for 4gb RAM & the X1900XT vid card.

I also downgraded to the 160gb, because I'm throwing in my other hard drives so the $ it saved me is a nice dinner date out or some new wine & cigars!

For those of you with a developers discount and a tight budget, you can get the base configuration Mac Pro for $1,699.

I ordered:

2.66 GHz Quad Xeon
2GB 667 DDR2 FB DIMM ECC-4x512
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB
250GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s drive
16x SuperDrive DL
Airprt Extrm & BT 2.0+EDR
Apple Kybd & Wrls Mgty Ms
Aperture
Mac OS X

Est Ship Date: 9/5/06

Debating emailing them and telling them to bump it up to 500GB, probably not though. 3.0GHz wasn't worth the $700 something charge to me.

Yeah the 2.66Ghz are the sweet spot for price point. When Intel ups the clock on the Woodcrest, you can sell off the 2.66Ghz and upgrade to something else, by that time they should be cheaper.
