Not a great deal of point to this post, but I'm excited :)

I've had a G4 Powerbook for coming up to 2 years. It's been a wonderful machine. I had some narcolepsy issues with it, but I sent it in for repair last month and it's fine ever since. I've been toying with the idea of eBaying it and getting a MacBook (smaller size, Intel chip, more or less the same otherwise), but yesterdays announcement tipped me over the edge.

As a result I've ordered my stock black MacBook. I'll put 2 GB in later, I'm not paying double the price just for apple to fit it! I don't really need 160GB as my backup drive is only 120GB. I figure I'll partition off 40GB for boot camp when I have to use XP :(

Anyways, looking forward to its arrival but I'll be sorry to see the Powerbook go! Oh and one tip - if you are going to order one, phone them up. You'll get a substantial discount on AppleCare (£58 as opposed to £200!).. Apples Higher education is fantastic too!

Congrats on your new purchase, it's a worthy replacement to your Powerbook. Let us know when it arrives and what you think of it.

Right there with you!

I ordered one last Thursday, but the ship date has been bumped because I'm getting one of the new models (and a £25 refund).

Unfortunately there isn't an icon for bouncing up and down with impatience. Got a 20in iMac on order too.

On the downside, it's with a heavy heart that I'll be retiring the graphite G4, which is hands down the best computer I have ever owned.

Still ... gotta move with the times, and I couldn't pass up the potentially small window of opportunity during which my wife was prepared to allow me to update my kit!

Cheers

Jim

I have a black macbook (2GHz, c2d) it's a nic machine. Good choice.

As for edu applecare. If you don't want the uplift (that costs the £58) applecare is actualy included for free in purchases on the HE contract.

What do you mean by uplift? I forgot to mention the guy who I ordered with on the phone was a friendly, funny, enthusiastic person. Really couldn't have asked for a better person to take my hard-earned cash.

Now if only they were so happy when you phone up to tell them your Mac's broken! Not that I hold it against them - I'd be grumpy if I had to deal with irate customers all day.. poor sods.

Oh I see. They did that for my powerbook anyway as there isn't an Apple store near me, and the nearest apple authorised repair place is only open when I'm at work and is an hour away. If you are calm and polite enough you can get apple to collect :)

Really? :)

congrats on the purchase. i'll be doing the same, retiring an old powerbook for a black macbook, in august.

btw, great photos. love those holga shots.

Applecare is cheaper on the phone ? :|
Yeah.. £150 cheaper! I think it's an incentive to make you buy AppleCare straight away instead of waiting till your year is up.

Funnily enough I happen to run a website dedicated to Holgas - squarefrog.co.uk/holga. It's probably my favourite camera ever. Definitely the most fun one anyway.

I just finished talking to my sisters boyfriend about my new purchase and he's ordering his next week! I think the deal clincher was the 160GB hard-drive. That's about as future proof as I'm going to get. Well that and the fact you can always replace the hard drive yourself (pdf). Nice work Apple :)

Got an email last night to say it's been dispatched!! That means I could be playing with it this weekend! Awesome!

:EDIT: Went down to check my pigeon hole, and there was a nice brown box from apple there! WOOO WOOOOOOOOO! But now it's going to be a long day till I can get home and play :(
