I ordered the XS Max for ATT and my phone is already enroute with a scheduled delivery date of 9/21. (Track by reference trick on UPS.)

My question to everyone is...I paid outright for the phone. Wasn't thinking properly I guess but ordered the ATT model which apparently only works with ATT and Tmobile.

I am wondering if I should go through the effort of returning it to a store to get the sim free model that will allow me to go to any carrier.

So, my thoughts thus far is that the only real benefit I get is I can switch carriers if I wanted to. (I've been with ATT since the iPhone 3G and get a nice discount through HR at work.) I also feel it gives the phone a higher resale value.

Aside from that I am wondering if I just open the bad boy and enjoy it on day 1 or go through the extra trouble to get a sim free model.

First world problems...

Thanks in advance for the discussion!

I don’t see why you couldn’t. The only thing is will they have a sim free iPhone Xs Max available? I’m thinking they won’t. But my iPhone X is for ATT and I checked with Verizon if I could use it on their network. They said yes. I don’t see why it would be any different for the Xs models.

If you order from ATT you get a free 8+

They all have the same bands this year so it will work on any carrier once unlocked. You may just have to get ATT to unlock it (don't know their procedure for this but if paid in full they should unlock it for you).

All the models are the same this year. If you bought it full price from Apple it should already be unlocked too. Otherwise AT&T has an online unlock form and should do it no problem.

Yes, the ATT model from Apple store is UNLOCKED already.
So if I order the ATT version of the upcoming XR, which Apple doesn't list an unlocked version for yet, I'm actually getting an unlocked phone that I can just take the sim out of my old phone and stick it in the new one without having to deal with ATT?
