Ordering a 15" MacBook Pro, which HD to get?

I plan on ordering the 15 inch MacBook Pro. It comes standard with a 500GB 5400rpm hard drive and I'm considering saving $45 and getting the 320GB 7200rpm hard drive figuring that sometime down the road when SSD drives are cheaper swapping it out. Just wondering if anyone has chosen the 320GB 7200rpm drive and what you think.

The 7200 rpm drive will probably be much faster. You may even want to look into the 500 GB, the price isn't that unreasonable. The SSDs still seem too expensive...

The faster speed of the 7200 will barely be noticeable. And depending on the day of the week, the noise and vibration will drive you nuts.

Save yourself even more and go with the 5400. And even though an SSD may be in your future, I don't know why anybody would ever consider putting anything less than a 500gb drive in their macbook. It's just a few bucks more.

i disagree. i have a 7200 in mine and there is no noise or vibration that drives me crazy and noises drive me crazy. i would say go for it! it's worth it!! dont go ssd yet

I don't think it's worth the upgrade. I've tried a seagate and hitachi 320gb 7200 rpm drives, and the vibration and extra noise was annoying me, and the speed increase wasn't huge. As a result, I still use the 250GB 5400rpm hitachi drive that came with my mbp. I'm waiting until SSDs come down just a little bit more. The 80GB Intel X-25 is within my reach, but I don't think the capacity is enough for me.

Is the 500GB 7200RPM drives that comes with a CTO'ed MBP the same as the ones where vibrations and heat has been reported by some users?

I seem to read that these problems comes from users which retrofitted the Seagate Momentus 7200.4 drives.

Well to tell the truth I think a 320 hard drive will be large enough for me. I was thinking of taking what I save on the hard drive and getting the anti glare screen but I'm not sure about that.

I have a 3 car garage and could use another. (We only own 1 car).

Trust me... get the 500gb and use it. If you ever put that thing up for sale you'll get the extra $40 back, I promise.

I ordered my 15" uMBP online a couple of months ago from an authorized dealer. I thought it was suppose to come with the 320gb 5400 rpm std but when I checked it arrived with the 7200 rpm drive. After having it a couple of months I'm 100% satisfied with the 7200 rpm drive. I really wanted the 5400 rpm drive to minimize the noise/vibration factor but 7200 has been totally silent and vibration free in my experience (and I use the uMBP on my lap 99% time). In fact I can't tell any difference in noise/vibration between it and the Intel SSD I have in a Lenovo notebook.
