Should I got for the 1TB Drive or the 2TB?

I called up Apple about 15 minutes ago and spoke to the nicest guy EVER!

He gave me his extension number so I could directly call him whenever

I basically called up because I wanted to know about the delay on shipping 4-6 weeks when choosing an SSD option and then he went through everything with me (what I want to use my iMac for, what I do on my current computer and how much memory it already has) and convinced me not to buy the SSD drive.

He doesn't think I need the 2T at the moment, only the future will tell, but do you guys think I should go for it just for the extra £120 or shall I not bother?

2TB is a lot of data. How much to you have now?

A 1TB USB drive only costs £45 on Amazon, but USB isn't lightning quick. Remember, in a year or two there will be loads of thunderbolt drives which will be super fast.

That is a very good spec machine you are getting there!

At the moment I only have 223GB on this HP laptop and I am using up 166GB

A SSD is the biggest upgrade you can do for a computer, bigger than a faster processor. You can add a SSD later on to run off of like a boot drive. But it is better to run from internal than a external boot. Right now Apple is charging 500.00 US for a 256GB which is relatively cheap. Cheaper than if would to buy one on your own.

Moving your home folder, etc is a pain in the A## from a external, trust me. When upgrading the OS always give me problems. A 1tb + SSD for 600 is a steal. That is actually cheap.

I was indecisive also. I ordered a 21.5 with a SSD, for 1850.00. Called and canceled my order. Checked the price for a base 27 with 1tb + SSD. The Base 27 with 1tb + SSD cost me 2139.00. That is less than 300.00. Even though I like my HP 25.5 screen better, that is going to have to move to the side as a dual screen setup.

My base 27.5 with SSD will run faster than what you are ordering. Until you add a SSD, which will cost you more. And not be supported by Apple or support Trim, which you can add with a hack.

Just something to think about.

Please....programs open faster the first time after a boot and the computer boots quicker. You gain pretty much nothing more unless your SSD is large enough to store file and then they may open quicker.

It's a waste of money right now in order to save a few seconds.

Sorry but you're wrong on this one. An SSD makes a huge difference to your entire system's performance and there are many benchmarks that show this. Why give out poor advice?

Sorry to say this - but your post is ignorant rubbish !

SSD currently is the best upgrade for the average computer user bar none !!

Not only will OSx and programs load faster, all files stored on the SSD will too.

You get faster shutdown of programs and OSx too and everything from loading video to storing your work in photoshop, illustrator, indesign and dreamweaver becomes faster.

So I strongly recommend the SSD upgrade. It's not even that expensive compared to the over price apple charges for extra ram.
