i am not with cingular and plan on switching to cingular to get the iPhone. im still trying to decide whether or not to go to a retail store to get it or just order offline and not have to worry about it. i was wondering though, if i order through apples online store and they ship it to my house, do i have to go to a apple or at&t store to get it activated since i am switching over or will they have already done all that? i have never ordered a cell phone online. any thoughts?

AT&T and Apple have stated that they won't cancel your contract and move you over to them for you; you'll have to do that yourself. I've ordered a phone online but I wasn't keeping my old #, so I just cancelled my old one myself. I'm not sure how transferring the number would work.

They're promising the "easiest, fastest cellphone setup ever" for iPhone, and my bet is that this means we'll be able to take an iPhone home and set it up online (in most cases).

As for which location will be easier to get an iPhone from, online or in person -who knows. By staying home to order online you're risking it selling out online, and not making it to the store in time. But if you go to the store and they sell out... Best to go to the store and bring a laptop to order online as you wait :)

thanks for the info! sooo...i either need to go to my current carrier a day or so before i buy the iPhone and cancel my number(my contracts up). i thought you could order online especially because i've seen sites say "switching your number over, enter it here" so thats what i automatically thought that i could either enter my number over the web when i order online or when i go to the at&t just tell them im switching my number over. oh well. i guess this might be a good thing to check out before i get my iPhone! haha :p

Yeah I would definitely check out this website and check your current number's availability soon:

There's no need to cancel your current contract before you get your iPhone (and new contract). If you want to keep your number, call up AT&T and ask - I'm sure it'll be possible, but we (and they) may not yet know how.

My contract with T-Mobile just expired and I'll get an iPhone with a new number and keep my old phone for another few weeks while my friends and family get used to my new number.

thanks for the link! my number is available! so are we thinking when we go to an apple store or at&t store all we are going to do is buy the phone? and take it home and activate it online? i think thats what someone said up there^

I sure hope it works like that, I am in the same boat as you are. I have been out of contract since March, and I want to keep my number.

According to the rep I talked to (yeah, yeah I know how much that means). It will be set up online. I was asking a question about my contract not being up and she stated it won't matter. "You come in and buy it and then set it up later online".

yes i would very much rather do that then having to get a new number. if we can just buy one right out of the store and take it home, that would be awesome, and switch our number over, just do everything at home. i would love that. i dont really wanna spend my day in a crowded store. although i might camp out 1 day ahead. no more than that. or might just go early in the morning. what are you planning on doing? i sure hope steve lives up what he said about the process being easy! :)

I have a few options, as I have an Apple Store and several Cingular/AT&T stores around. Unfortunately, the Apple Store is in a mall. However, when the store opened, they let us inside to line up around 6AM. They even had coffee and donuts available for purchase. Maybe they will be nice with this as well.

Anywho, that's a topic for another thread. I desperately want the process to be simple, maybe they will use iTunes in some way.
