Oregon Minimum Wage Raised $0.30

I didn't post this in the news section because it is not news, and I didn't put it in politics because I don't want an argument about livingwage/minimum wage to happen. With that out of the way:

My boss just informed me the other day that minimum wage in Oregon, starting today, is raised from $7.50 to $7.80! Seeing as I work for minimum wage this is awesome news and I wanted to share :D :D

I was wondering if anyone else here at MR works for minimum wage, and if so, what is it in your state? Also, is there a minimum wage in the UK/Europe?

Just to be clear, I am not living off of this, I am simply bulking up my savings before college. Oh, and I work at Baskin Robbins (an ice cream chain, for those who don't know)
 
I'm going to have to address the underlying issues here. Do they give you free ice cream, and if so, how much?
 
There's minimum wage here in the UK. I think it's £5.35 for over 22, £4.45 for over 18s, and £3.30 for 16-18. However, given that the cost of living fluctuates wildly between different areas of the UK, and that I don't think I've worked in a single restaurant that actually complies with these rules, its not very effective or fair.
 
California minimum wage just went to $7.50/hr. That's up $.75 from the prior wage of $6.75, in effect since 2002. So Oregon is the promised land to someone working for minimum in CA.
 
Missouri also raised their minimum wage by quite a bit. Before today minimum was the same as the national minimum wage at $5.15. They raised it today to $6.50.
I currently work part-time and make $5.90 so this was good for me, however I do see some of the problems it could cause

No, because my manager is a stingy %^*#@ who dosen' give raises, even to assistant mangers, we only get 30% off. However we get as many free samples as we'd like, and since we can scoop our own ice cream, "one scoop" can weigh as much as a pint. Hey, it was an accident! :D
 
Here in BC is $8 per hour but only $6 for the First Job/Entry Level wage in the first 500 hours of work. Cost of living in Vancouver is $12.50 per hour...so you do the math.:rolleyes:

Not if you live in San Francisco. They just raised the minimum wage up to $9.14 from $8.82 as of the 1st.
 
In Illinois, our Governor recently signed legislation into law that will annually increase our minimum-wage until 2010. Under the terms of the legislation, the state’s minimum wage will rise by $1 to $7.50 per hour beginning July 1, 2007. Beyond that date, the legislation includes annual increases for three years: to $7.75 in July 2008, $8.00 in July 2009, and $8.25 in 2010. The legislation goes into effect July 1, 2007.

I'm slightly right-leaning, but this is a good idea; makes the transition for companies quite a bit easier to swallow :)

BTW - I'm in CO, where our minimum wage was moved from 5.15 to 6.85 an hour. I'm self-employed and in college, though, so it doesn't effect me.
 
I've worked for $8 an hour for a few years now, and when the local minimum wage was raised from $5.15 to $6.50 in 2006 all it did was depress me since I now only make $1.50 above minimum wage:rolleyes:
 
I work for pennies more than minimum. In Connecticut, minimum was $7.40 and it was just raised to $7.65. I was making $7.49 per hour until last week, and I got a raise to $7.64. Now they have to give me another raise. :)

Good thing I still live with my parents.
 
This is kind of a stupid question but... I'm in California, if I'm making $11.50/hour and minimum goes up from $6.75 to $7.50, should I expect an increase to $12.25, or is it reasonable to even think that?

unfortunately, it is unreasonable. Maybe your employer will be the exception, but I doubt it.
 
Missouri minimum wage was the fed minimum, $5.15. In November, MO voted to raise it to $6.50, which is nice seeing as how I make $6

It seems like many states raised their minimum wage. Since this is my first year having a paying job (besides lawn mowing and odd jobs for under the table cash) I was wondering if this is a regular thing? Do some states (obviously Illinois now does this) raise their minimum every year? It could definatley give me something to look forward to to get me through my New Years hangover :D

Well, regardless of how much you make, try to invest and save at least 10% of your paycheck before taxes. And if you can invest and save more, fantastic!

It's fun to watch your money grow over time! :D
 
I just found a paystub from one of the jobs I had in high school. $3.85 CDN an hour, minimum wage. Care to guess the decade? HINT: It's now up to $10/hr.
 
Arizona's minimum wage was also raised. Used to be $5.15/hr, but they raised it to $6.75/hr.

I think its entirely reasonable to think, considering the cost of items and services will likely increase at businesses who pay the increased wage to their minimum wage employees. Basically, because of the minimum wage increase the buying power of your wage will likley decrease (however minutely), so expecting a proportionate increase to keep your buying power at the same level as previously isnt unreasonable to think. However, most employers will most likely find the thought of a $.75 raise for an $11.50 per hour worker laughable, especially since they already have to raise the salaries of their minimum wage employees.
