I read in an ilounge.com preview that the Oregon Trail (known by any child of the 80's) from gameloft was supposed to hit the app store this week. I've been searching for that app multiple times a day.

has anyone else read anything to suggest a different release date?

------

edit.

oregon trail is now in the itunes app store.

Maybe rejected by Apple, and since the rejection letter is still under NDA, they can't tell the public the app has been rejected.

hmm, i don't know why they would reject the Oregon Trail. I mean, is the hunting of buffalo (but you could only carry 100lbs back) that violent?

I don't think it would be a licensing issue. Gameloft has released the oregon trail for other mobile platforms.

this is probably the one game I'm willing to pay full price for instead of waiting for it to go on sale.

I'd love to see this game on the iPhone, I remember playing it in elementary school. Who knows though, Apple has the stupidest reasons ever for rejecting apps. "Your application 'Oregon Trail' was rejected due to the offensive nature of killing deer and bison and due to the confusion it may cause iPhone users by making them think they are purchasing a trip to Oregon."

Think I'm joking, you should see some of the apps that get rejected because they would "confuse" users.

thanks for bringing this game up guys. I am excited for this game to be released now. I remember the days back in elementary school playing this on a TRS 80!! after searching for it, the video of the game looks like it will be pretty cool. we'll see what gets released.
It's always nice when they work on the real classic games!!

Gameloft twittered yesterday that they had just submitted the app to Apple.
I'm guessing we'll see it in the app store early/mid next week.

Is it just me, or did gamelofts twitted feed get rid of the Oregon trail update? I saw it there last week, and now it's gone. I have been checking iTunes 5 times a day

Anyone tried it yet? I wonder how similar it is to the original? I loved playing this game in elementary school.

i bought it minutes before I posted. and it is different from the original. and when i say original, i'm thinking of the apple II version where you had to flip the disc over at some point during the journey.

if you google iphone and oregon train and gameloft, there is a nice article with the developers where they talk about the differences between the original and their version, and why they made the changes.

is it an improvement? yes
is it very different? yes, and to the point where I am thinking, "what do i do next?" or "how do i do [this]......"

well worth the $5.99

going to appshopper.com to look at their other "premium games," the price is pretty stable and rarely changes, and even if they do, not by much.

it's a sweet spot in terms of the price. I would hesitate if it were $10, but at $6, i think it is very appropriate for the quality of game you're getting, especially with the replay value.

nice, so how is the game?

it's a nice game. besides the actual oregon trail, there are other mini-games and bonus objectives that you can strive for. the graphics are nice and cartoony, but I've never played any other version besides the Apple II version.

Does it have good replayability? I mean once you beat it, I guess, you can start all over with different people, etc. but it's like watching a movie the second time, you technically know what to expect, etc. I guess that's not a great analogy but it definitely isn't a simcity.

i think replayability can be somewhat subjective. I mean, i don't get bored easily, and I can listen to the same song over and over again without being driven nuts (i guess i grew up before adhd affected every other kid)

there are a lot of side objectives and "challenges" that you can do. There are definitely more routes to take. the original oregon trail had 2 or 3 places where you could take a different route.

there are a LOT of different routes to take.

I only played it for about 10 minutes, but there is one thing that makes me almost not want to play. There's a loading screen almost every minute for some reason or another (side objectives / quests / hunting (etc)). They really need to cut down on the loading screens. While they aren't long, just the fact that they pop up so often gets annoying.

And one thing I would like to see is that all the dialog be voiced over. There's only a small phrase that gets said for the dialogs, and is not a voice over, just a phrase.

Overall though, it's worth the $6.
