I am trying to get USB 3.0 drives connected to my (new to me) Mac Pro 4,1 (flashed to 5,1 with 144.0.0 firmware also applied)

Hardware/PCI shows:

PXS2:
Type: USB eXtensible Host Controller
Driver Installed: Yes
MSI: Yes
Bus: PCI
Slot: Slot-2
Vendor ID: 0x1b21
Device ID: 0x3242
Subsystem Vendor ID: 0x1b21
Subsystem ID: 0x3242
Revision ID: 0x0000
Link Width: x4
Link Speed: 5.0 GT/s

Added a small USB 3.1 hub (one 3.1 port, 3x USB 2 ports) which shows:

Hardware/USB shows:

USB332Bus:
Host Controller Driver: AppleUSBXHCIPCI
PCI Device ID: 0x3242
PCI Revision ID: 0x0000
PCI Vendor ID: 0x1b21

USB 2.0 Hub :
Product ID: 0x8601
Vendor ID: 0x14cd (MOAI ELECTRONICS CORPORATION)
Version: 0.00
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: USB Device
Location ID: 0x00200000 / 1
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 100
Extra Operating Current (mA): 0

I have a "proper" MacOS supported card arriving next week.

I have tried two different USB3 dual SATA docks, both showed up as USB2, with slow transfers. Both work as USB3 un a Linux box.

Any ideas?

I just tried two USB-C hubs, both are reported as:

USB332Bus:
Host Controller Driver: AppleUSBXHCIPCI
PCI Device ID: 0x3242
PCI Revision ID: 0x0000
PCI Vendor ID: 0x1b21

USB2.0 Hub :
Product ID: 0x2817
Vendor ID: 0x2109 (VIA Labs, Inc.)
Version: 90.24
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: VIA Labs, Inc.
Location ID: 0x00200000 / 2
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 0
Extra Operating Current (mA): 0

and they do report the USB flash stick as there.

Weird.

I guess I have to wait for the "MacOS supported" USB 3.0 PCIe card I ordered.

Forgot to add:

Running High Sierra from a 500GB WD Blue NVME ssd in generic PCIe 4x sled, stock GT120, 2x Orico PCIe 4x USB 3.2 gen 2 USB-C adapters.

Your Orico card uses the ASMedia ASM3242
https://www.asmedia.com.tw/product/E0CYQ4fSpaQxdjzA/f32YQ14SmApn1wNA

It supports all USB 3.x speeds from 1.1 Gbps to 20 Gbps.

macOS doesn't support 20 Gbps though. But it should work with 10 Gbps. Maybe you need a newer macOS to get 10 Gbps? To get 20 Gbps, you need a third party driver but I don't know how well that works.

A USB 3.x hub should appear as two hubs: one USB 2.0 hub and one USB 3.x hub.

Thank you.

I will try to install Catalina on a sata SSD, and also try the driver you linked to.

Some googling showed I am not the only one with USB 3 hub issues, but the only potential fixes I found were for hackintoshes.

I can switch to a GT720 or GT630, however I will lose the boot menu, unless I also install the OpenCore boot loader, or spend a small fortune on a recent / more powerful GPU that I don't need (I don't game much, mostly use cad and dev tools).

Ok, installed DosDude1 patched Catalina, it shows the USB 3 ports... I still have to verify the transfer speed. I did not have any luck installing the OC bootloader, will try again later.

I installed a non-Mac flashed GT630, seems to mostly work - ie drives the Cinema display 30 with the dual link DVI fine, however I can't seem to get Displayport outputs working.

Using a Displayport to HDMI adapter it worked a couple of times, but no longer.

I'll try other GPU's, I also have a GT720, GT740, GTX660 and a couple of older Radeon's. I am currently waiting for assorted mini 6 pin to six and eight pin power cables to arrive.

Maybe DisplayPort can be made to work https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...lina-led-cinema-display.2298246/post-30204918

Thank you!

No joy though. I edited the plist, made a product ID from system information (I could not find one via google for the GT630), and added both sets of keys (from the thread, and the one I made) ... still no signal from the monitor.

I have not given up yet, still trying until my mini 6 to 6 & 8 pin power cables arrive.

Update:

I switched to my GT720, which has an HDMI port, and it works!

I currently have my Cinema display (2k) and Dell monitor (4k, running at 2k30), which will do until my power cables come in.

Thank you!
