I just bought the 2nd gen iPP 11; it’s a great tablet but not that distinguishable from OG 11. In my case we shift tablets down through the family so when we upgrade mine everyone gets upgrades; that made it worth it for me now, but if it had just been for me I’d say it probably wouldn’t have been worth it.

I'm thinking about upgrading to the 11" iPad Pro, I can get 2018 11" 256 for about $500 refurbished... Is it worth it to spend more for the newer model?

Thanks

I don't live in the US. How much is the 2020 iPad in US dollars?

Personally, I think if you can find a refurbished 2018 iPad Pro model, go for it. They are virtually identical, and most people are not going to need the improved camera and the extra ram may not be that visible to everyone.

The 2020 iPad Pro 11 256GB is $899.

They are $550/679 64/256gb at Apple refurbished store. Goes in and out of stock. Micro center has them super cheap $399 iPad Pro 11 IF you can find a micro center store around you that still has 2018 iPad Pro 11 in stock.

I picked up iPad Pro 11 64gb two weeks ago for $550 plus 10 percent military discount at Apple store refurnished. $494.

i installed 60 apps so far and still have 40gb free. I keep my files and photos in the cloud. So 64gb is plenty for me.

there isn’t much difference between 2020 and 2018 iPad Pro. 6gb ram vs 4gb but 99 percent of the time. It’s zero difference since ram only If you had hundreds of apps running at same time. And most of us don’t need the cameras.

Performance-wise there is no reason to go 2020 version. That is a great deal, you should snap that up.
The decision gets trickier if you want AirPod plus a new iPad Pro.

Apple education store sells 128gb 2020 version of iPad Pro 11 for $750. Combine with the $150 AirPod pros for free. That effectively makes it $600 for new model.

so it depends what your needs are. I have AirPods already. So don’t need the education back to school deal. But if I were in the market for AirPods or AirPod pros (cost you $90 for AirPod pros) with education promo. That i would get the 2020 iPad Pro model

My wife and I upgraded our 10.5 Pros to 11 Pros (2018) in February 2020. We do not regret that the 2020 iPad 11 Pros came out a few months later. We will be keeping these for 3+ years and then upgrading again, just like what was done with the previous iPads. The 2020 model does not seem like a big upgrade. Either that or as we get older we’re more content with what works for us vs having the latest and greatest (For $$$$$$).

If it’s Apple refurbished I would say go with the 2018. Otherwise, I would make sure to do your homework on who’s offering that (pretty solid) deal. The devices virtually operate the same. I found a geek-certified, open box 2018 512GB iPad Pro 11 w/cellular on Best Buy‘s website about two weeks ago for roughly $30 more than a brand new 2020 256GB iPad Pro 11 w/cellular from Apple’s discount store.

Ultimately, I returned the 2018 and bought the 2020. Double the storage was cool, but I don’t need it and the extra camera, 1+ GPU core, LiDAR sensor and 2GBs of RAM spelled more future proofing. Plus, new-in-box offers some extra peace of mind: full year warranty and 60 days to add AC+).

Normally I’d say if you have the 2018 already keep it. If you don’t, get the 2020. In your case, you’d be saving at least $300 off the retail of a 256GB 2020. That can buy you a combination of AC+ (if allowed) an Apple Pencil, Apple Magic Keyboard Case and/or Apple Smart Keyboard Folio. Let us know what you decide.

I would say it depends. I bought a Refurb 12.9 256 on amazon for $900 and my local micro center had a 2020 12.9 512 for $1000. I returned the amazon and bought the micro center for future proofing and it was a good deal. If it wasn’t for the great deal though, I would have kept the older model.
