Original 3g box size and new 3g ($99 model)

Hi, I recently purchased a iPhone 3g from a third-party. When I got home I noticed that the box of my original 3g (released in 2008 or 7)wasn't the same size as the newer one (that was brought recently). Did apple change the size of the boxes? Did I get ripped off? Oh yeah the box my 3g (third-party brought) is the same dimensions as the new 3gs. Photos included...

The newly brought 3g is the smaller box...

Apple did change the packaging for the iPhone... it's discussed in their environmental report:
