My original AirPods have been trouble free since I bought them. Yesterday, during a Skype call, the right one kept dropping out and eventually went silent. Oddly, after the call I tried to listen to Music, and it worked fine. Today, it won't work at all. I know it's connected, because if I remove it from my ear, the left one stops playing. If I double tap the right one it either pauses or resumes playback. I assume this means it is not a Bluetooth issue. I checked the sound output balance and it is correct.

As I write, the AirPods are at 85% charge each and the charging case is 84%, so that's not the problem.

I tried all the suggestions I could find: Unpair and repair. Thoroughly clean using a microfiber cloth, cotton buds and a very soft brush on the speaker grills. Nothing worked. I even tried the "one hour in the freezer" trick which I've used with success in the past on both keyboards and hard drives. (Do not try this at home.)

I'm assuming that the right AirPod is toast and that a new pair is in order.

Am I wrong?

I verified that the microphone is working. It's only the speaker that failed.

I'll probably get some new Air Pods Pro. The current Air Pods (1st generation) are three plus years old and probably don't have much battery life left. Doesn't make much sense to pay US$70 for just one new Pod.
