So, I feel kinda bad that I practically "rape" this site for information and never bother to register because I honestly felt I never had the right to give feedback until late. I have decided to register for the main reason of myself getting an iPhone.

Despite the new kinks in the 3GS iPhone, I was offered an original iPhone. On the back it just says iPhone not iPhone 3G or 3GS.

I already owned an AT&T phone, with unlimited data and texting and a 450 minute plan.

Because my plan is 60 dollars a month and I didn't want to pay up to 120 a month I decided to unlock it and jailbrake it.

In result of the unlocking, I can put my original SIM in it and it works fine. The one problem is my data isn't working. I am not sure why because I have a data plan and its with AT&T. I don't want to inform AT&T of this maneuver because it would end up costing me a fortune. According to other websites its a problem with my APN but I am not entirely sure how to fix that because I added a wap.cingular profile and it didn't seem to work. I was hoping to get the internet with the unlocking process and that didn't seem to work.

In Sum:

I have a Unlocked and Jailbroken iPhone 1G or 2G
In it I have a blue 3G ATT SIM with Unlimited Data and Text
I have Cydia but not Icy
I have the 3.0 Software on it

Please be as specific in helping me as possible because I have no idea how to get to what or what anything really is. My knowledge is more fixed on PCs than Macs :\

First if you have AT&T then you do not need to jailbreak or unlock the iPhone to use it. You unlock to use an officially locked iPhone on another carrier. And depending on how you unlocked, you may be best of restoring the iPhone since some result in dropped signal.

Second I have no idea where you are getting 120 a month to use an iPhone. Your unlimited text + data plan is 30 a month. Unlimited messaging is 20 dollars a month (or you can get 1500 messages for 15) and the original iPhone data plan is also 20 dollars a month. So for only 10 dollars extra, you get to use data.

Can you explain the first part again? Because I have AT&T don't I still have to unlock it inorder to use it, because I dont want to get a smart phone data plan or anything, I want to be able to keep my unl data text plan and use the internet on it and text and call. My signal has had an E next to to it ever since I got it.

Unlock means just that, unlock. Most cell phones get sold locked i.e. an AT&T iPhone can only work on AT&T, a Vodafone iPhone can only work on Vodafone. Unlock removes this lock so an iPhone sold locked to AT&T can work on lets say T-Mobile. It has NOTHING to do (directly) with data.

You gotta play to play. That means you do not get your incompatible 30 dollar a month unlimited data + text plan. You need to get a standalone text plan (15 for 1500 or 20 for unlimited) and the iPhone data plan (20 for 2g or if you are unlucky the 30 dollar for 3g)

As for the E, EDGE is all you will get with a 2G.

EDIT: Put the sim card into the iPhone and connect it to iTunes. Sync it and upgrade the carrier settings. Do not upgrade the firmware unless you care about losing jailbreak. Also make sure in cydia you selected make my life easier. Sign in on the ATT website and remove your current 30 dollar a month data + text plan. Then add 15 or 20 dollar a month text plan. And hopefully the iPhone data plan for 20 dollars is also visible. If so add that too, if not then call ATT and tell them to add that too. For 5-20 dollars extra a month you can now use the iPhone.
