Original MacBook Memory question 2 or 3 Gb?

I have the original MacBook, I bougt it abou 4 weeks after they started shipping. How much memory does it recognise. I put in 2Gb but I have read it will recognise and use 3Gb. If I replaced a 1Gb stick with a 2 Gb stick would it work?

if you have an original core duo (not core 2 duo) machine, then the maximum amount of ram is 2 gb. 3 gb isn't even an option.

Could you specify which "original" MacBook you mean? If it's the first one released after Apple discontinued the iBooks, then the previous poster is correct that 2gb is the maximum. However, if you have the first Core2Duo released, it will recognize 3gb.
