Original MBA Sleep Mode

When you close the lid on the original MBA (putting it to sleep), does it stop the hard drive, leaving it in a state where it is most immune to damage from accidental bumps? (Is the hard drive left in as safe a state as it is if you shut the computer down?)

I assume the hard drive is most vulnerable to damage from movement when the computer is on.

Yes, when any Mac is in sleep mode, the hard drive is not spinning and is not in use. As far as moving your Mac while it's on, the Sudden Motion Sensor should protect your drive.

Well, I know it isn't spinning, but I thought it might not be 'parked' (if there is such a thing) where the hard drive head is far from the data read/write area.

Yes, it is parked in sleep mode.

Thank you. That is probably what I should have asked in the first place.

(I'm so glad to not have the worry with my SSD 2010 MBA. I rarely use my old MBA any more).
