Hello,

I'm beta testing Yosemite and I am unable to open certain MS Word documents. I have two versions of the same document (one has been edited). I can open the original version, but not the newer version. Any ides what would cause this?

Thanks!

It's version 14.4.3 of word. I don't get any errors. It just crashes word. I will check out your link.

----------

I found this in the Console log when I tried to open the file:

2014-08-03 10:16:16,574 TOCGenerator[1612]: WARNING: The Gestalt selector gestaltSystemVersion is returning 10.9.0 instead of 10.10.0. Use NSProcessInfo's operatingSystemVersion property to get correct system version number.

I'm not sure what that means. But I just tried opening the older version of the doc (and succeeded) and that same message showed in the console.

----------

Ok, this is what shows up for the document that won't open, but not for the one that does open. Perhaps it means something:

I removed all the comments and track changes on another computer and then emailed it to myself and I was able to open it. Not ideal, but it will have to do.

Sorry I couldn't help any further, as I am not that proficient in reading those messages.
Luckily you solved it in a complicated matter.

Use the Feedback Assistant to report that bug to Apple and maybe even Microsoft, and include your solution.

Similar Problem and Solution

I had the same problem and error codes.
I found that there are two apparently unrelated issues.

First, a problem with track changes on. MS Word kept crashing on opening and did not allow me to do or modify anything within the program before it crashed. The issue was solved by finding the document it was reopening every time and deleting it so that MS Word wouldn't find it.

Second, MSW 2011 doesn't handle well multiple monitors or spaces. When a monitor is connected or disconnected, when several windows are open in different spaces or when full screen is turned on, and another document is open in another monitor/space, MSW will crash.

There seems to be an obvious 3rd problem related to the fact that MSW does not seem to recognize Yosemite from Maverick. A patch will likely solve that once Yosemite gets out from Beta.

Finally, in the meantime, I will only use track changes after disabling spaces, and turn them back on when I finish tracking changes.
