OS 10.12.6 can't move instead of copy.

I have a 2017 MBP 13" no touchbar, when I connect an external drive (USB stick to dongle to Mac or SATA SSD to adapter to Mac), it will allow me to copy the data between the internal storage and external, but I can't prevent it from copying. i've tried holding down Command, Option and Control one at a time and they don't help.

I also have a 2011 MBP 13" on 10.12.5 which works property (press commend to move). I don't know if this is a bug in 12.6 or there is something wrong with the new Mac.

The external needs to be formatted in a Mac writeable format (ExFAT, FAT32, HFS+) to move since moving requires deleting files. Unless you installed something extra to write to different formats. Copying is just reading and works with many formats.

What format is the external? Do you have an extra driver installed on the older 2011 model?

Can you move between two folders on the 2017 model?

That's a good point and something I didn't think about, but I was trying to move from the internal to the external, so it should be deleting on the internal. It also does allow me to do the copy and then erase the files by dragging them to the trashcan.

The external SSD was actually pulled from the 2011 model and I haven't reformatted it yet, so it has an intact Yosemite installation and it should be HFS+. The flash usb stick is FAT32.

I can move between two folders on the 2017. That is the default behaviour when the source and destination are on the same drive and working fine. I have to hold down option to make it copy instead and that also works.

What happens if you hold down the "COMMAND" key key instead of the option key? Are you able move the file then?

I move files from my home drive to my NAS box and this is what I use to move the files.

I tried command as well as option. I just gave it another try with the same result. But it has the same problem both ways, to the mac and to the SSD.

I also tried reformatting the SSD. It's now empty and "Mac OS Extended". Permissions for (Me) are Read & Write. On the Mac side, it's the desktop for the user I'm logged in as.

This is weird. I just tested it out with the command button and this did work? Head scratcher!

The user account I'm using says "Admin" under the username on the Users and Groups pane. So that means I already was logged in as admin, right? I know it's bad practice but the computer is only around 3 weeks old and I haven't set much up on it yet, it's the default first user.

I tried the command and option button on the other side of the keyboard as well in case I had a bad key.

I also tried with a cheap PNY usb flash drive and an adapter and got the same result. I can copy but not move both ways.

Edit: Okay, this is interesting. If I hold the command button the little green + icon doesn't disappear but it does copy. And on further investigation when I move the folder around the screen a little bit while holding command the. + icon eventually disappears. When i release the command button the + icon doesn't reappear until I move it around a little again. The 2011 MBP with 10.12.5 works as expected with the + icon appearing and vanishing as I release and press command.

Also, instead of pushing the command button when you are over the folder, hover over the file you want to move, press the command button then click and drag, keeping the command button pressed down the entire time. Then when you get to the location you want to move the file to, release the mouse button to drop it but keep the command button pressed until it starts to move the file.

UPDATE:

I was able to move the file from a file within a folder to a folder on my desk top.
I was able to move the folder to a folder on my desk top.
I was able to move the folder to my desktop.
I was able to move the file within the folder to my desktop.

Moving from a FAT 16 (MS DOS) along with a FatEX.

Also I tried it on a Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Looking over the permission, my username was on all of the partitions with Read & Write for my username along with staff having Read & Write.

Running Mac OS X 10.12.6

Okay, you're going to love this one.

When I hold down command before I click on the file, I can't move the file at all, it stays in a fixed place in the source folder and the icon won't move at all.

If I click on the file, then hold the command button, then drag the file while holding down the command button it moves the file as it should. But if I release the command button before releasing the trackpad , the green + still doesn't reappear until I've dragged the file a bit farther.
