The MacBook's Airport, that is.

I've been so busy over the last several weeks that I didn't even notice OS 10.4.10 was available. I installed it last night via Software Update, and immediately my Airport Extreme Base Station came to a crawl. Accessing the main page of a website like MacRumors took literally minutes, if it worked at all.

To make a long story short, after two reformats (reinstalling OS 10.4.9), two more installs of OS 10.4.10, hours of fiddling with the Airport Extreme Base Station, and installing Apple's 2007-004 Airport Update several times for good measure, I've given up trying to get my MacBook (2.16, 3 GB of RAM) to work with Airport under OS 10.4.10. Regardless of what Apple implies in its Airport updates, Airport is still borked under OS 10.4.10.

I've wasted an entire afternoon and evening trying to straighten this issue out in OS 10.4.10, and in the end, the answer is quite simply to use OS 10.4.9 instead. I'm mad and frustrated, because my wife's MacBook 2.0 (same generation as mine) works fine with Airport under OS 10.4.10. But there is no doubt that OS 10.4.10 is causing the problem with my machine. A 100% clean install of OS 10.4.10 with all Apple Airport updates results in a MacBook that can't go anywhere on the Internet using any browser. Reinstalling 10.4.9 fixes the problem completely.

It's late, and I realize I'm ranting. I'm just seriously ticked off at the amount of time the OS 10.4.10 update has caused me to waste, and also at Apple's apparent flippancy about fixing the problem. If you have any suggestions, I'd appreciate them (since iWork '08 won't work without OS 10.4.10), but nothing I've found via Google has been worth the HTML it's made of.

Someone else had the same problem a few days ago. Can't remember who though but at least you know it isn't just a localized problem.

Perhaps it was my post that you found similar. My problem was not with OS 10.4.10 which worked just fine. It was with the last Airport Extreme update, 2007-004... Of course, if I had applied the Airport update first, I may have had a similar problem... Grrr...

See my other post on that update following:

I applied this update on my intel MacBook Pro when it first came out and my wireless connection stopped working completely on Mac OS X (it works fine in bootcamp). Just hangs. I get a connection to the router, but it won't go to the internet. Was on the phone with Apple and we tried everything. They suggested I contact linksys and they tried everything. Since Apple would not support "third-party" routers, I even bought an Airport Base station... Same problem... I visited the Apple store and talked to one of the Mac "Geniuses". He tried everything, still nada... He suggested I do an archive install (back to 10.4.8 in my case). I did that and it worked fine for a while until I re-applied this update. When I did, I was back to square one.... So, now I'm back running fine with all updates applied except this one which I won't apply; I will wait for the next airport update, but I will back up my system first befor applying... I would stay far away from this one... :-(
