anyone tested the 10.5.3 with the 8800GS-machine?

I followed the 10.5.3. thread. The following was reported:

- Somebody reported Dock tearing still present.

- Another reported the following:

I'm on a Mac Pro not an iMac, but I've been waiting for this update to improve my 8800 performance. It's not as good as I'd hoped for.

Xbench graphic results...

Quartz
10.5.2 - 215.65
10.5.3 - 202.54

OpenGL
10.5.2 - 161.83
10.5.3 - 138.43

User Interface
10.5.2 - 263.37
10.5.3 - 264.60

I have my screen set to flash on alerts, this is still jittery, which is why I'm saying it's not as improved as I'd hoped for. My X1900 was never jittery like that.

- Yet another reported the following:

Preliminary testing says ProApps performance is up!

Barefeats test (with better system than mine in parenthesis):
Atom Strand: 14.93 (16.4)
Dotted Axis: 17.89 (30.4) !
Directions: 19.68 (21.2)
Blocks detail: 58.92 (could not fit everything in RAM, rendered 9 seconds only)
Brush Open: 25.26 [PAL], 23.99 [NTSC] (25.2)
Light Open: 39.49 (46.5)
Satin Blue Background: 31.76 (34.4)
Sketch Open: 24.5 (23.2)

Notes: Testing was very unscientific. Specs are Mac Pro 2.66 Mac OS X (10.5.3) 4 GB Ram, 8800GT, 6.66 TB + 150GB 10K RPM Raptor vs BF's "Early 2008" 16GB RAM machine. And also BF does not mention if they are using NTSC or PAL templates. Still results seem to have improved in most cases. Obviously this should have been tested against my own machine running 10.5.2, but I didn't have time to run those tests. Suffice to say it "feels" faster.

Hope this helps ya'll out

Core Image apps faster

We at the Bare Feats lab are seeing significant speed gains in Core Image intensive apps on our iMac 3.06GHz with GeForce 8800 GS after upgrading to 10.5.3:

iMovie import and thumbnail render = 39% faster

iMaginator Core Image Morph = 19% faster

Motion 3 Template RAM Preview
Blocks - Detail.HD = 18% faster
Tech Blue - Open 2.HD = 21% faster

We'll post the detailed results on the site tomorrow morning.

I guess the question that needs to be raised now is has the 2600 also seen performance gains with 10.5.3?

Excellent news. This will finally wash away any presumptions that the 2600 is better than the 8800, even for iApps...GO APPLE!

Well... technically :)
if the improvement % is presented against the 8800 running on 10.5.2 then it still might not be the case in which it will surpass the 2600 in core image numbers as some differences were close to 50%.

I wanna see full test tho no matter what :D

If true, this gives me the impression that the 8800 is >2x faster in games, and equivalent in speed in core image processes. That kind of begs the question of whether there is even more performance to be gleaned out of the 8800.

Somewhat counter-intuitively, my instincts tell me "no" or "not much." There are a lot of tricks and tweaks gpus take advantage of to render games quickly, often at the expense of nearly-imperceptible differences in video quality. However, when you lock them to the high precision and quality requirements needed to present a seamless desktop UI, you can't take a lot of those shortcuts. I imagine gpu makers focus a lot on the hardware components needed to maximize game performance (not just drivers), and the more high-quality/precision pathways aren't nearly as optimized/shortcutted.

Yeah, I'm really glad to see that the nVidia 8800 is seeing some improvements but I also hope that Barefeats will retest the ATI 2600 as well under 10.5.3 and do the whole head to head again.

Barefeats just posted the test.
From what I can tell the core image in the 8800 is now similar to 2600 so it clearly makes it a better all around card as with 3D the 8800 still blows the 2600 by light years.

Good news I guess. I was hoping for better but you can't have it all :)

sweet.. this is the first update of the driver since the imac release right? so i would guess the numbers will even get a little better over time.. not bad!
